Several Ukrainians have told me in person and X that my original spelling of Kyiv is wrong. I said “Kiev” originally, which is the Russian spelling.
When the war started, on-air journalists gradually switched from saying Kee-yev to Keev. I never understood why. Until now.
Russia is waging a cultural war on Ukraine. They are indoctrinating kidnapped children to only speak Russian, forbidding the use of Ukrainian. Russian leaders claim Ukraine has no distinct cultural identity or history separate from Russia.
But last night I ate borscht, a Ukrainian dish, for the first time. I’m in a city originally named Kyivan Rus’. Muscovites took the name to create “Russia.” Even the underlying technology for Russia’s nuclear energy is Ukrainian.
Russia has appropriated Ukrainian history and culture since Russia’s founding. Ukrainians take pride in their history and identity. They do not like to see it appropriated by Russians killing their families every single day.
So if you’re an American asking yourself why this matters, you have your answer.
Reporting from KYIV with @LauraLoomer@LoomerUnleashed
While russian politicians party in Venice, waves of missiles & drones have pounded Ukraine. People are under the rubble of an apartment building in Kyiv this morning. Important for the world to see this footage and stop inviting this terrorist state back into civilised society
🤬 Ballistic, cruise, and hypersonic missiles bombarded Kyiv all night, targeting central apartment blocks and burying many under the rubble. It is not possible to hate these savages enough!!!
Fuck russia 🇷🇺 🤬🤬🤬
What is the deal with the Russians worth? Trump recently agreed with Putin that he could hold a parade, but there would be an exchange of prisoners and no strikes on Kyiv.
Kyiv this morning. A ballistic missile struck a residential building. Civilians are under the rubble.
In total, over the past 24 hours, the Russians have launched about 1000 drones and dozens of missiles.
@Stammy I shipped my first apps from this beast running Hackintosh, still remember how iPhone Simulator wouldn’t fit fully and have its Home button cut off:
На шоломі Владислава Гераскевича @heraskevych — 22 обличчя.
22 українські спортсмени, які загинули на фронті або стали жертвами атак рф.
22 життя, які забрала війна.
За цей «шолом пам’яті» МОК дискваліфікував українського спортсмена. Але пам’ять — не політика і не порушення правил.
Поки ми пам’ятаємо — вони живі
I think it’s actually impossible to describe how difficult it is to live in Kyiv right now with the terrorism against heating facilities and freezing temperatures. It should never be forgotten what Russia did and is trying to do. Every single person is a civilian target
My son has been using his 3D printer almost 24/7 since last month when he got it for his birthday, so I built this BambuLab printer status monitor for @adafruit MagTag. Mac mini is doing the actual monitoring over MQTT, with MagTag pulling only most valuable info from it.
This genius man is Mykola Leontovych. He wrote probably the most famous Christmas carol in the world - “Carol of the bells”. He wrote that in Pokrovsk, Ukraine, now a besieged frontline city.
Do you know why he was not able to give the world another similar masterpiece?
