Sreyneang’s family is not alone. Many villagers have chosen to stay behind despite serious safety concerns, driven by a strong desire to support the soldiers.

“Other villagers continue to stay,” she said. “If I did not have a chronic illness, I would not have fled. I would stay and cook for them.”

At night, she finds it difficult to sleep, her thoughts fixed on the soldiers’ welfare.

“I feel so sorry for them. I think about what they eat. I imagine they could be my sons, my brothers, or my husband,” she said with a deep breath. “My heart feels broken into pieces each night when thinking about them.”

Beyond the immediate danger, Sreyneang worries about the long-term impact on her family’s livelihood. Like most villagers, she depends on farming to survive.

“We harvested our paddy rice before fleeing, but we have not sold it yet,” she said. “The real problem is that this year we could not plant cassava for the next season.”

Without cassava, next year’s income is uncertain.
