⚓ UPSC Strategic Blueprint:
The Bab el-Mandeb Crisis & India’s Stakes 🇮🇳
🌍A critical maritime choke point that controls one-third of India’s entire external trade—the Strait of Bab el-Mandeb—is facing a fresh geopolitical crisis!
🚨🔍 1. The Present Crisis (Current Context)The Threat 💣:
On the heels of the Strait of Hormuz crisis, Iran has reportedly instructed Houthi rebels in Yemen to shut down the Strait of Bab el-Mandeb if the U.S. attacks Iranian power plants.
Why it Matters to India 📉:
One-third of India’s trade flows directly through this narrow bottleneck.
Economic Strain 📊:
India’s economy is already managing the fallout from the Hormuz crisis; a double shock could trigger serious inflation.
Seafarer Welfare 🚢:
Unlike Hormuz, India cannot easily ban its mariners from this route without severely impacting the livelihoods of thousands of Indian seafarers.⏳
2. Re-visiting the 2024 Blueprint (Historical Context)Red Sea Aggression 🚀:
Following the October 2023 Gaza War, the Houthis launched asymmetric drone and missile attacks on over 40 vessels.
170 Years Backward 🔄:
To avoid attacks, over 2,000 ships abandoned the Suez Canal and rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope in Africa, delaying vital imports to India.
The Collateral Damage 💸: Egypt lost 25% of its Suez Canal revenue, and Israel’s Red Sea port of Eilat filed for bankruptcy.
Insurance Shocks 🏦:
Marine insurance skyrocketed because 90% of global shipping is tightly controlled by just 12 Risk-Averse Protection and Indemnity (P&I) Clubs.🤝
3. India’s Strategic Way Forward (The Solution)Instead of joining broad, Western-led ideological alliances, India must champion a minilateral, theatre-specific "Trade Protection Task Force".
The Trilateral Pivot (🇫🇷 France & 🇯🇵 Japan):
Both nations maintain active military bases in Djibouti, right next to the Strait. India must build a joint naval coalition with them.
Clear Division of Labor 🌐:
India will provide maritime domain awareness via the Information Fusion Centre–Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) in Gurugram, while France and Japan provide on-ground logistical support.
Engaging Arab Powers 🐪:
India must actively co-opt Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
With the Houthis declaring a "maritime embargo" on Saudi ships, both nations now have their economies directly at stake.
💡 4. Value Addition for UPSC Mains (GS-2 & GS-3)SAGAR Vision 🌊:
Acting proactively establishes India's vision of Security and Growth for All in the Region, proving India is a reliable "Net Security Provider".
Strategic Autonomy 🦅:
By avoiding a formal U.S.-led military alliance, India protects its strategic autonomy and avoids getting directly entangled in the U.S.-Iran proxy war.

🌟 Outstanding archaeological reporting by Arun Janardhanan — a brilliant piece connecting the Stone Age to the Sangam Age through evidence-based excavation.
UPSC Mains Enrichment | Tenkasi Excavation (Tamil Nadu)
📍 Karivalamvanthanallur (Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu) on the Vaippar River reveals an uninterrupted cultural sequence from the Microlithic Period to the Early Historic/Sangam Era.
Microlithic stone tools, iron implements, and Sangam-era brick structures found together indicate continuous human occupation across millennia.
The site appears to have bypassed the Neolithic/Chalcolithic phase, making it a unique cultural trajectory in South India.
Discovery of a massive brick structure (8.7 m × 4.2 m) suggests advanced architecture and possibly granary or rainwater harvesting.
Bricks resemble those from Keezhadi, Alagankulam and Poompuhar, linking the site to the Early Historic/Sangam Period.
Excavation unearthed red-slipped burial urn with painted peacocks, along with human molar & premolar teeth, indicating burial practices and ritual significance.
Peacock symbolism is corroborated by Akananuru and parallels with Harappan Cemetery-H traditions, showing cultural continuity.
Artefacts recovered include hematite, glass beads, terracotta figurines, graffiti-marked pottery, black-and-red ware, shell bangles, spindle whorls, coral & gold beads, iron artefacts, and copper coins.
Evidence points to iron-tool making, bead manufacturing, shell-bangle production, and weaving workshops—highlighting craft specialization.
Excavations indicate the settlement functioned as a manufacturing centre integrated into ancient trade networks.
The location linked the eastern and western coasts, reflecting trade connectivity and economic vitality.
More than 100 artefacts recovered; scientific carbon dating is being conducted by Beta Analytic Laboratory (Florida).
Findings strengthen understanding of Tamil antiquity, urbanisation, technology, and economic complexity during the Sangam Age.
