Zimbabwe’s worst transport disaster in modern history, which occurred on Lake Kariba, continues to claim more lives.

The death toll has now risen to 94, while 77 people were rescued. By today’s confirmed figures, the vessel was carrying at least 171 people or more, yet it was licensed to carry only 90.
It was overloaded by at least 81 people as of today’s numbers, almost twice its permitted capacity.

Even more disturbing is that the vessel was in a terrible state and required maintenance costing US$40,000. The government which owned the vessel was warned, but it ignored the warning and failed to carry out the necessary repairs.

This was not simply an accident. It was a preventable catastrophe caused by gross negligence, a disregard for public safety and a failure of leadership at many levels.

This is one of the darkest days in Zimbabwe’s history and the country’s deadliest transport disaster of modern times. Ninety-four people are dead and still counting, families have been shattered, and the nation deserves more than condolences and empty speeches.

Those who ignored the warnings and allowed an unfit, dangerously overloaded vessel to operate must be identified and held accountable. Zimbabweans cannot continue dying because those entrusted with protecting public safety treat human life as disposable.
