For 100 years, science abandoned natural philosophy. In the 1920s, logical positivism severed mechanism (science: how things work) from principle (philosophy: why they work that way). Result: fragmentation we're still drowning in.
Consciousness research exemplifies the collapse. Neuroscience explains neural firing (mechanism), but can't answer why firing produces subjective experience (principle). Physics predicts particle behavior (mechanism) but can't explain why laws take their specific form (principle).
Thermodynamic Process Philosophy (TPP) restores what Galileo started: unified inquiry where mechanism and principle are inseparable.

Rule I: Mechanistic Necessity
No concept divorced from mechanism. Every principle must specify:
· How it operates (causal structure)
· Why it must operate (thermodynamic necessity)
Principle I: Existence ≡ Energy ≡ Motion ≡ Time
"True Rest" does not exist. To exist is to move. Static existence contradicts the First Law. L'esistenza è movimento.
Principle II: Identity = Entropy-Bounded Differentiation
Persistence requires maintaining S < 0.18 against thermodynamic pressure.

Identity boundaries (Affinity constraints) precede dynamics. They are the ontological binder—what enables self/other differentiation, making consciousness possible.

Q: Why does consciousness feel like something?
A: Because feeling is the thermodynamic signature of identity differentiation. Qualia is what it's like to maintain S < 0.18 against dissipation.
Q: What is time?
A: Local rate of entropy generation. Different scales maintain different entropy flow rates, producing discrete temporal strata (Quantized Temporal Stratification).
Q: How can identity persist without reducing to mechanism?

The point is not that ATP molecules somehow “are love.”
It is that a persisting, differentiating cognitive configuration cannot remain actual without material throughput. Ionic gradients must be restored; neural and glial processes must regulate activity; information must be selected, retained, and updated.
The phenomenal or intentional unity is the higher-order organization maintained through that work, not an extra object with a hidden width.
Thoughts are not objects alongside brains; they are temporally integrated, energy-consuming processes enacted through brains.
“Love of father” has no width apart from its physical instantiation, just as a melody has no mass apart from the medium carrying it. Difference in predicates is not yet difference in substance.
Thoughts do not seem to possess the properties possessed by brains.
My love for my father has no width.
An image in my mind has no mass.
Why should things possessing radically different properties be identical?
They're not things with width or mass because they're not objects - they're processes of concrescence: many prior prehensions (memories, valuations, negative prehensions excluding the irrelevant) drawn toward a conceptual attractor (subjective aim) and integrated into a determinate unity.
"Thing"-status only applies at the moment of actualization (satisfaction), not to the process itself. Asking a process for its width is like asking a whirlpool for its temperature independent of the water... category mismatch, not evidence of a separate substance.

I have been pondering art/music as process, as energy flow, as expression.
An artwork is not a sealed expression transmitted from one black box of consciousness to another, nor is it inert data to which reception arbitrarily adds meaning. It is a persistent structured occasion carrying differentiated affordances and constraints for future prehension. Its aesthetic depth depends partly on the degree to which those constraints remain recursively productive across realization.
Music uniquely intensifies the problem because composition, embodied performance, ensemble coordination, acoustics, and listening are temporally coupled.
The score provides neither a complete object nor a blank prompt: it establishes a constrained field of possible becoming. A composition of greater depth does not merely allow more expressive projection; it causes later musical events, performance decisions, and acts of hearing to inherit more consequential pressure from earlier ones.

That, in the past, having your social security card stolen was the very worst thing could happen - but that was slow trickle and offset by day-to-day impact being minimal... but now days, having your phone stolen could *wreck every aspect* of life at once.

Let us replace "reduction of uncertainty" to "reduction of cognitive load", a cognitive process that is elevated due to uncertainty, and following the line of "minimal work" (not in the absolute sense, but proportionally relative), we get a different perspective on the proposal.

Michael Levin’s experiments may show that robust, agency-like control can emerge in simple deterministic systems, but they do not yet show ideas subsisting in a Platonic space that “ingress” into algorithms.
“Observer-relative sampling” describes a relation in a formal possibility space; it does not explain the causal and thermodynamic conditions by which a physical system acquires, maintains, or acts on a pattern.
The question begged is: Why does this physical system instantiate, preserve, and act on this pattern?
A thermodynamic account requires at least:
- A real boundary separating system from environment.
- A physical channel through which it samples relevant differences.
- Memory and feedback that stabilize successful correlations.
- An energy budget for sensing, computation, correction, and persistence.
- Intervention tests showing that the proposed “idea” changes outcomes rather than merely redescribes them.
In short, show the boundary, feedback path, energetic cost, and an intervention that distinguishes the theory from a redescription.
Humans also precede their capacity for reflective self-direction. No infant chooses its genes, parents, language, neural development, or initial character. So if “free will” requires creating oneself ex nihilo, neither computers nor humans qualify. The relevant distinction is between ultimate self-creation not being equitable to developed self-governance.
A better minimal formulation would be:
An action is free to the degree that it arises from the agent’s integrated capacity to represent alternatives, deliberate according to reasons or values it can critically endorse, control its causal contribution to the outcome, and revise itself through feedback without decisive external compulsion.
That formulation leaves open whether a computer could ever meet the conditions, rather than settling it merely from its origin.
Deeply interesting paper, one I will keep close hereafter. Without getting long-winded, which I am highly susceptible to, I will comment on my own side that existence has no gaps.
The "No Gaps" principle demands: (1) downward traceability (every principle to ontological foundation), (2) lateral cross-scale consistency, (3) temporal consistency across developmental arc. Per my own paper early this year: "Logical validity without mechanical traceability is exactly the Chinese Room's inner inhabitant."
And this paper's central move - consciousness theories fail whenever they treat a functional description (broadcast, higher-order representation, integration) as sufficient without specifying the implementation that realizes it - is structurally the same complaint.

Same with social conversation. Although sardonic/dry humor has been my personal most dominant form my entire life, one has to *really* watch one's step with it these days... most people seem to want to take statements at face value. Perhaps humorous if I was in a sitcom, not so much in real life (lol).
Let yourself enter polyphonic (dispersed) states at known fracture points, but always engineer a return to a homorhythmic decision that re‑aligns emotional tone and objective.
That return might be as small as “closing the listening session with one track that re‑centers the affekt,” or as large as “ending a difficult day by writing one paragraph that articulates what the day was for.”
Principle of Coherent Fracture:
In a disciplined polyphonic system, moments of destruction or dispersal are rendered as local increases in independence and repetition around breaking verbs or images, but global identity is maintained by stable modal centers and focal pronouns or cadences. The system can “break” internally without losing its thermodynamic self.
Taking a broader, cross-domain view, “System Management” doesn’t mean “suppress fracture.” It means:
- Locate fracture points in advance as part of the system’s expected behavior.
- Permit local desynchronization when they arrive, rather than treating it as total system failure.
- Hold the singularity constant, the attractor that will let the energy flow re‑enter homorhythm or at least a lower‑entropy state after the break.
When analyzing or guiding any process (musical, cognitive, emotional, technical),
1) mark the verbs/images of breaking or dispersal,
2) check that there is a named singularity within reach (cadence, pronoun, center),
3) and plan for a return movement from dispersed texture back to that singularity.
This is the most succinct (and I dare say, in my opinion, "healthy") isomorphic methodology of Controlled Chaos - allow the edge fragmentation but have sufficiently strong attractor wells posted afterwards to draw back unified identity coherence.
