Meet Havildar Digendra Kumar MVC – “The Cobra of Tololing”
He is one of the most decorated soldiers of the 2 Raj Rif and a living legend of the 1999 Kargil War Awarded the Maha Vir Chakra -India’s second‑highest wartime gallantry decoration - he is widely remembered as the “Cobra of Tololing” for his role in capturing the strategically vital Tololing heights.
Born:3 July 1969, Neem Ka Thana, Rajasthan
Awards:
Maha Vir Chakra – 15 August 1999
Sena Medal – 1993 (counter‑terror operations in Kupwara)
Retired:31 July 2005.
From IPKF to Hazratbal
Digendra Kumar joined the Army in 1985and quickly built a reputation as a fearless commando:
IPKF, Sri Lanka (late 1980s): Engaged in high‑risk jungle operations against LTTE militants- shooting down insurgents, destroying ammunition dumps, and rescuing captured paratroopers.
Kupwara: Conducted intense counter‑terror operations and was awarded the Sena Medal for conspicuous gallantry.
Hazratbal siege (1993): Took part in operations to flush out terrorists from the Hazratbal shrine in Srinagar and was commended for his performance.
By 1999, he was already a battle‑hardened operator with multiple combat deployments.
Kargil War: The Tololing Assault (13 June 1999)
Sector: Dras, Kargil
Objective:Recapture Point 4590 / Tololing Top (~15,000 ft), a heavily fortified Pakistani position dominating the highway and valley.
under Major Vivek Gupta.
Digendra’s role: Commander of the LMG group in the assault company; part of the elite “Cobra” commando element.
Digendra was hit by a bullet in his left arm, but instead of taking cover, he kept firing his LMG suppressing enemy positions and allowing his comrades to advance.
His sustained fire broke the enemy’s ability to target the climbing troops effectively, enabling a close‑quarters assault on the bunkers.
He was involved in neutralizing multiple enemy bunkers on the Tololing crest using grenades and hand‑to‑hand fighting.
Some narratives describe him engaging in fierce hand‑to‑hand combat inside bunkers, helping kill numerous enemy soldiers.
By the early morning of 13 June 1999 (around 0400 hrs) Indian troops had cleared the position and hoisted the Tricolour on Tololing Top
This was the first major Indian victory of the Kargil War and a crucial psychological turning point: it proved that Pakistani positions on the heights could be taken.
He sustained multiple bullet wounds during the assault (reports mention 5 to as many as 18 bullet hits on his body armour/body).
Despite his injuries, he continued to fight until the position was secured and only collapsed after the objective was achieved.
Why His Story Matters
Havildar Digendra Kumar’s Tololing action is remembered because:
It turned a seemingly impregnable Pak position into India’s first big Kargil victory.
It showed how firepower, courage, and close combat at 15,000 feet could break enemy morale.
It embodied the ethos of the Indian infantry: lead from the front, keep firing even when hit and complete the mission. Jai Hind!
