Did you know that there is a pop-psychology about cigarette-holding styles? 👀

Even though it’s not scientifically proven, manga and film often use these gestures deliberately to communicate personality traits.

📌 Fun Fact first: A Dr. William Neutra invented this idea in the 1950s!

His famous chart labels cigarette holds as these 4 types:

1️⃣ The Expert: Holds the Cigarette firmly between index and middle finger, hand steady. Conveys precision, skill, calculation. Often used for characters who are rational, sharp, and methodical.

2️⃣ The Artist: has a loose wrist, graceful fingers, cigarette is held lightly. Shows creativity, elegance, self-expression, a theatrical aura.

3️⃣ The Lover: holds it softly, palm exposed. Reveals emotional openness, sensuality, friendliness.

4️⃣ The Loner: holds it downward, wrist closed off, fingers curled. Conveys introversion, guardedness, detachment.

📌 William James Moriarty = The Expert / Artist

He holds his cigarette with precision, and his movement is controlled and aesthetic.

Psychologically: He has this calculated elegance and controlled emotions with detached confidence. He isn’t trying to impress, but he knows he does.

🚬 Liam smokes (sometimes) to slow down time, to think, plan & punish himself...

📌 Sherlock Holmes = The Loner /Artist

His grip is loose, natural, a bit messy: fingers curled, wrist relaxed, posture unposed

Psychologically: it fits his Loner profile (detached, internal energy) mixed with some Artist (intuitive, expressive). Sherlock is Free-spirited with restless energy, intuitive, chaotic, lives in his own mind and he is observant but unbothered by elegance.

🚬Sherly smokes (a lot) for distraction, stimulation and comforting his restless mind.

🔹️Sherlock’s way of holding a cigarette tells you he’s a brilliant, chaotic loner.

🔸️William’s way tells you he’s a controlled, elegant mastermind.

Do these interpretations fit their personalities?

And do you think Sensei @344_hikaru did this on purpose? 🤍
