The demand for a 5 Day Work Week in banks is not new. It already stands agreed upon in the Bipartite Settlement of March 2024. What remains is its long-pending implementation.

At the same time, the unilateral and discriminatory PLI system must be abolished and replaced with a fair, transparent and inclusive framework for all employees, recognising the collective effort behind every institution’s performance.

Hardworking bank employees are not asking for privilege. They are asking for implementation of an agreement and equality in reward.

A motivated banking workforce strengthens Indian banking and the nation.

Why is the government selling a profit-making IDBI Bank while pouring money into a sinking Vodafone Idea at a high price?

Let’s look at the numbers.

IDBI Bank earned ₹5,788 crore profit in 2024. The government wants to sell 60.72% of it - why let go of a winner?

Meanwhile, Vodafone Idea lost ₹31,238 crore in 2024. The government is converting ₹36,950 crore of Vodafone’s dues into equity, taking government's holding at 49%.

That too at ₹10 per share instead of it's current market price of ₹6.81, paying additional ₹11,787 crore unnecessarily - our money wasted!

Selling a strong bank cheap and overpaying for a bleeding company? Sounds like privatizing profits and socializing losses! Or can we say Reverse - Disinvestment.

Public Sector Banking: Suffocating Under Micromanagement

Micromanagement in public sector banks isn’t just a flaw; it’s a daily reality. Constant interference by DFS, senior executives, and regional heads turns simple routine tasks into mountains of frustration. Instead of enabling efficiency, these interventions only create bottlenecks and demotivate employees.

The root cause? No clear vision. Without a unified strategy, public sector banks run on a cycle of short-term targets, reactive circulars, and last-minute orders, leading to chaos and burnout.

How Can This Be Fixed?

1️⃣ End Daily Interference – Stop the constant meddling in branch-level operations. Let employees do what they’re trained for, without worrying about arbitrary instructions and approvals.

2️⃣ Provide a Clear Vision – Public sector banks desperately need long-term strategies focused on sustainable growth and customer satisfaction. Enough with the ad hoc firefighting!

3️⃣ Stop Target Obsession – Unrealistic targets aren’t just frustrating; they lead to unethical practices, shortcuts, and dissatisfied customers. Focus on quality over quantity.

4️⃣ Trust Branch-Level Employees – Those on the ground understand their customers and work environment better than anyone sitting in the head office. Empower them to make decisions.

5️⃣ Fix the Core Systems – Outdated IT systems, a lack of proper staff training, and unnecessary bureaucracy are the real culprits. Employees can’t thrive when the tools they rely on are broken.

Micromanagement is draining the spirit of public sector bankers, turning what should be meaningful work into a frustrating, unending struggle. It’s time to stop treating employees like robots chasing numbers and start trusting them to deliver real value.

Let’s demand a banking system that respects its employees and focuses on long-term success, not short-term fixes
