Classic Examples of Data Flywheel Models
The data flywheel is a data-driven growth model with a core logic:
More users â More data â Better models/products â Better user experience â Attract more users â Stronger data leverage â Larger moat
Web2 Examples (briefly mentioned)
One representative case is Amazonâs e-commerce recommendation engine:
User behavior data (search, purchases, reviews) â Train recommendation algorithms â
Increase conversion rate and user satisfaction â More engagement and sales â
System gets more accurate and drives exponential growth.
Another one is TikTokâs content recommendation system:
User viewing, likes, watch time â Train personalized recommendation engine â
More accurate content delivery â Higher user retention â More UGC and engagement â
AI gets better, users get more addicted.
⸝
Letâs talk Web3, because thatâs what actually matters.
In our space, there are two canonical data flywheel models, and itâs no surprise people keep trying to build them over and over again:
⸝
1. Exchange Flywheel
Binance is a textbook case of an operational data flywheel:
User trading data â Product recommendations (IEO, Earn, etc.) â
Higher user stickiness â Increased user activity â
More trading depth and liquidity â New projects want to list â
Even more users onboarded.
The core is the multi-dimensional interplay between BNB Chain and the exchange, combining user behavior + product ops + financial incentives.
⸝
2. Public Chain Flywheel
Ethereum is the best example of an ecosystem data flywheel (Bitcoin isnât really a good example):
More users/developers deploy dApps â More transactions and interaction data â
More infrastructure upgrades â
More on-chain applications â
Ethereumâs credibility and standards rise â
More projects and devs come in.
Open data flywheels are far more powerful than centralized onesâin fact, they might be the holy grail of data flywheels.
Iâve been exploring this path for a while⌠havenât made much progress though.
Ethereumâs current core is using data to feed back into L2 design, ZK proving, MEV strategies, and other technical upgrades. But honestly, itâs a bit sluggishâpartly because weâre under-skilled but over-ambitious. Still exploringâŚ
⸝
Why Data Flywheels Matter More in Web3 Than in Web2
In Web3, code and product modules are easily forked and cloned.
But data is the one thing that canât be copiedâitâs the real competitive asset.
Whoever controls the data, controls the narrative, the resource flow, and the power to reshape the ecosystem.
Today I saw someone say they suffered massive losses because an API went down. So I want to share how I personally lost $500,000 â simply because I trusted the wrong people.
This is a reflection I wrote for myself, and for anyone whoâs ever lost money because they believed someone else.
Iâd like to think I have some discernment. Iâve read books, I enjoy research. But stillâ
Information overload is not the same as upgraded judgment.
@finblox was a project backed by Sequoia and Dragonfly. I thought, this must be incredible, so I deposited funds. But behind the scenes, these guys were actually lending money to @zhusu â that bastard. When the collapse happened, the founder had the audacity to ask us to âsettle for half.â The project has basically rug-pulled, and the founder has since moved on to launch countless other ventures.
Iâve aped into memes. Got caught in the moment. Sometimes I didnât even check who posted the call before blindly following. And the result? My balance quickly went to zero.
How did I comfort myself back then?
â˘âEven Sequoia invested â it must be legit.â
â˘âAll the KOLs are shilling â itâs bound to pump.â
â˘âItâs labeled as a deposit â how bad could it be?â
Looking back, that wasnât judgment â that was laziness and wishful thinking. Truth is, I made money too fast and got cocky.
I outsourced my decision-making to others â and deserved to be harvested.
In crypto, itâs not about how smart you are. Itâs about whether you can think for yourself.
Is liquidity locked? Is the contract open-source? Do you know the VC unlock schedule?
If you donât know any of this, it doesnât matter how much you lose â because fundamentally, you didnât make a decision. You just followed the herd and made a bet.
Trust others, and youâll lose money.
â˘Hold your own keys
â˘Evaluate your own risks
â˘Manage your own positions
â˘Own your own outcomes
Every place you think youâve found âtrustâ â thereâs a hidden sickle waiting to cut you down.
Since then, Iâve made myself a few iron rules:
â˘Only invest meme money I can afford to lose
â˘Never deposit large funds into unknown wallets or exchange addresses
â˘If I donât have time to research, I skip the hype
Thatâs the $500,000 lesson I learned.
If youâve taken a similar path, I hope you wonât pay the tuition a second time.

In my young days,
I had tasted only gladness,
But loved to mount the top floor,
But loved to mount the top floor,
To write a song pretending sadness.
And now I have tasted
Sorrowâs flavours, bitter and sour,
And canât find a word,
And canât find a word,
But merely say, âWhat a golden autumn hour!â
The Ethereum Scam
Itâs the year 2049. You are an ordinary student named Nobita, living in a world mentally controlled by the Ethereum Foundation. Giant, holographic slogans like âETH Creates the Futureâ float permanently in the sky. Adults stare blankly at the chips embedded in their wrists, obsessed with their virtual lives on the Ethereum network, mindlessly reposting on social media: âRISC-V to the moon!â and âWeâre changing the world,â as if the real world didnât exist anymore.
At school, every lesson glorifies Ethereum and the divine wisdom of its founder, Vitalik. Teachers preach that the Ethereum network has brought peace and prosperity. Nearly every class has an âETH geekâ proudly wearing Ethereum logo T-shirts, endlessly praising decentralization and the power of ZK, with an air of superiority.
Until one nightâyouâre jolted awake by a faint whisper. You open your eyes and see Doraemon by your bedside. He speaks quietly but firmly: âEthereum is a scam. Wake up!â
At first, you donât believe him. After all, youâve been raised to think Ethereum saved the world. But then Doraemon pulls out a special gadget: the Memory Lens. When you look through it out the window, reality distortsârevealing your cityâs true condition: decaying streets, lifeless people, and heaps of electronic waste.
âThe Ethereum network is just an illusion,â Doraemon says grimly. âIt hasnât improved our lives. It implanted chips into our brains, hijacked our thoughts, and trapped humanity in a fake prosperityâblinding us to the collapse of the real world.â
Doubt begins to take root. Doraemon tells you that there are others whoâve awakenedâsome were once die-hard Ethereum fans who spent all their savings on NFTs and gas fees, obsessively voting on meaningless DAO proposals, only to realize it was all a lie. Now, theyâre organizing to overthrow the Ethereum Foundationâs control and free humanity from mental enslavement.
In the days that follow, you secretly connect with other awakened individuals. Slowly, the illusion begins to crack. Despite great risk, you know you must fightâbecause true freedom and hope lie just ahead.
AI is the real scam draining wealth from Crypto natives. Run!
Itâs a pity that @ABCDELabs wonât be raising a new round. I chose to post this during a quieter moment, hoping everyone would calm down and think more clearly.
In April 2024, the Bitcoin halving directly slashed minersâ primary source of income. The current Bitcoin hash price is near its five-year low. If Bitcoinâs price continues to fall, more miners will shut down, potentially exposing BTC to security risks.
PS: Bitcoin isnât that fragile. If miners drop off, the Bitcoin protocol automatically adjusts mining difficulty to maintain block production speed (though it could become vulnerable to attacks).
So, the 2024 Bitcoin ecosystem boom is essentially a self-rescue movement led by Crypto OGs. The emergence of protocols like Runes and OP_CAT is aimed at boosting on-chain activity to increase minersâ income. The core problem boils down to two key points:
1.Most Bitcoin ecosystem projects provide zero value to Bitcoin itself. Instead, they launch their own chains and pocket the revenue.
2.Due to its slow block times and high costs, the Bitcoin network is better suited as a settlement layer and source of trust for projects that deliver real value.
Entrepreneurs are quick to copy. Once a model succeeds or becomes convincing, a flood of imitators rush in. But Bitcoinâs core maintainers are smart and rationalâthey arenât driven by charity or idealism, but by pure logic and freedom. So the bubble gets popped quickly. Thatâs why Bitcoin remains the largest and most decentralized electronic cash system in the world. Its underlying ideologyâincentive-driven systemsâis the foundation of the blockchain universe.
There are âEthereum killersâ, but never a âBitcoin killer.â Over the past four years, many of us have been misled by the noise and warped ideology of the Ethereum ecosystem. History repeatedly shows us that the world runs on incentives. Every person, every country, every race is fighting for survival. The true value of Bitcoin lies in its core of absolute rationality and freedom.
Making money in the Bitcoin ecosystem doesnât require launching a tokenâespecially now, token issuance in this space has become highly inefficient. Newcomers should consider building high-leverage services directly around Bitcoin itselfâa far more efficient route.
@DujunX made an upright and admirable decision. As for @ABCDELabs, I donât think their investment direction was wrongâitâs just that the right targets werenât found. By the way, those mocking ABCDE are the real clowns. 𤥠I sincerely hope Du Jun doesnât lose faith in Crypto and fall into another trap.
