I understand my following is largely founders and thought leaders working on ambitious projects. But I also know from first hand experience that builders at the hackathons and the meetups are largely just trying to make it. I am writing this for the latter.
We are here again. For an undetermined amount of time. If this is your second bubble, picture yourself 5 years younger and imagine where that person would be in their journey of crypto. Where would his/her attention be.
for people not around in '21, i'd like to give a little taste of what "froth" actually looks like:
Axie reached fdv of $40bn (same mkt cap as EA Sports and 15% of GDP of the Philippines)
Sandbox reached $6bn fdv, valuing the platform at ~$6mm per DAU
GuildFi and Merit Circle each raised $100mm+ on Fjord public raises
There were daily $10mm+ sales of individual NFTs (punks, bayc, artblocks, deafbeefs)
There's "crypto native froth" like we saw in March ($50mm solana presales)
then there's "real world froth" (Sequoia, Tiger, Softbank shipping 10-figs into vapor crypto projects)
"how will I know when we're close to the top" -- there will be signs
Don't focus on the fact that musical chairs will stop just be aware that it will. Only you can determine if what you have is worth taking off the table.
Biomes is an autonomous world project and major onchain challenger to Minecraft
It's also readying for domination
@wmpeaster has the op-ed ✍️:
-----------------------------------------------------
@redstonexyz, an Ethereum Layer 2 centered around autonomous worlds and onchain games, has experienced a recent activity surge, much of which can be explained by the rise of @biomesAW.
An autonomous world project, Biomes is a fully onchain virtual environment, and its alpha release kicked off in October 2024. The vision? Become the virtual world with the largest GDP, i.e. economic activity.
Built atop @latticexyz's MUD onchain app framework, Biomes is still early in its development, but it aims to achieve its ambitious economic goals through a trio of fundamental pillars: Digital Matter, Smart Items, and Infinite Expansion.
The basics worth keeping in mind here:
🧱 Digital Matter makes up the resources, like wood and beyond, of the Biomes world.
⚗️ Smart Items allow in-world objects like chests to function according to customizable smart contracts, paving the way for a wide range of economic use cases.
🌌 Infinite Expansion refers to how the world’s growth is open to all—anyone will eventually be able to run nodes to expand and help steer the project.
Taken altogether, these pillars point to a future where people will be able to lean on the mechanics and asset system of Biomes to run actual virtual businesses.
In other words: making money will be possible in many different ways here.
The project still has plenty of things to build and touch up before it goes all-out on its planned vampire attack on Minecraft. Expect more announcements and rollouts in 2025 accordingly.
That said, though you can still get an early taste of the vision by checking out the alpha release at https://t.co/sCVPzWCDMM.
Upon signing in, you’ll receive a dedicated wallet you can deposit ETH into to cover your in-world transaction fees. 0.01 ETH is enough to cover 1,000s of transactions, and I recommend opting for the Relay option for fast transfers. After this, you can press the “Play” button to dive in.
If you do start to explore Biomes, you’ll be prompted to complete a series of initial quests by the Settlers Union, a player-created organization. These quests will help you become acquainted with the world's basic mechanics and earn your first in-world items.
Once you’re done with your initiation events, the name of the game is mining and trading resources and making and protecting new builds. Think Minecraft, right, but with all the wide open possibilities that come with being fully onchain.
To be sure, things are super early around Biomes right now, but it's got serious long-term potential.
Down the road, the project can even tap synergies with other technologies, like AI agents and trusted execution environments (TEEs), to unlock new kinds of interactive onchain social experiences.

1/ This Wednesday, July 24th at 4PM CET / 10AM EST, we're hosting our inaugural biweekly Topology Protocol Community Call.
We'll be diving into the Topology Protocol, CROs and CRDTs. Come join! Link 👇
working on a blogpost on how we used Yjs to construct a p2p CRDT multiplayer platformer space, with collision resolution and projectile (WIP! by @0xNonCents).
Topology protocol aims to provide such affordances and more plus BFT guarantees and better sync speed
@sameoldlab @damor_eth @guiltygyoza@apixtwts Much more research needed to see if it is superior to client-server but being able to do platformer gameplay is promising. So many genres are possible with CRDT leveraged game worlds.

@fortnow You write "... my research didn't have real world implications,". That's so wrong:
All modern SNARKs and STARKs use LFKN arithmetization. STARKs are merely a more efficient form of BFL+BFLS poly-logarithmic verification.
Your math is the basis of next gen economy and society!
