The OP_CAT opcode was initially available in the Bitcoin script but was shelved in August 2010 due to concerns about potential memory-related issues. OP_CAT allows Bitcoin to be received into a script that can check almost any part of a later transaction spending those bitcoins. However, due to its powerful capabilities, it needed to be disabled. This opcode enables the creation of exponentially large stack elements during script evaluation. However, the Tapscript introduced in 2021 is an improved scripting language that specifies a maximum stack element size of 520 bytes.

On October 21, 2023, Ethan Heilman and Armin Sabouri reintroduced OP_CAT in a BIP proposal on bit-dev.

It allows bridging assets, facilitates creating more utility on the Bitcoin blockchain, and, as a soft fork (like Taproot), assists developers in building more applications on BTC. This unlocks new possibilities for Bitcoin scripts.

Some potential applications include decentralized copyright management contracts, advanced decentralized gaming contracts, decentralized resource management contracts, flexible micro-payment contracts, decentralized identity management contracts, decentralized content verification contracts, decentralized insurance contracts, decentralized governance contracts, and more.
