For most of the human experience we attempted to restrict financialization because we understood the societal drawbacks.

Until ~1930 there were betting markets on elections, we banned them because we understood the perverse incentives they introduced.

Prior to 1591, you could bet on the outcome of the papacy! It was then decreed illegal to preserve the sanctity of the church.

There are countless examples of learning that allowing widespread betting leads to poor outcomes and erodes institutions.

It’s amazing how easily we forget history.
