Echo, a former pound pup, is a 3.5 year-old German Shepherd handled by DCP's first part-time civilian handler, Sean Chaulklin. Ozzy, a 1 year-old Belgian Malinois-German Shepherd mix is handled by Officer Sandoval.

Today there will be a Peace Gathering at Richmond City Hall welcoming the arrival of Venerable Monks on their Walk for Peace. Large crowds are expected.

Capitol Square is open and @DGSvirginia continues to work on safety preparations throughout the area. Slick conditions continue, so please use extreme caution while driving and walking!

Capitol Square will be closing today, 1/25/26, at 2 PM and reopen tomorrow at 10 AM. On 1/26/26, the Capitol and General Assembly Building will operate on a normal schedule for Session.

Although there's still some uncertainty about the details of the expected winter storm this weekend, what is known is that Virginia won't be dodging mother nature's winter fury this time. Regardless, NOW is the time to start preparing.

Lobby Day road closures and “No Parking” restrictions near Capitol Square on Monday, January 19 will begin at 8AM and will remain in effect until approx. 6PM.

Expect loud blasts on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026, at approx. 12:31 p.m. around the Capitol Square and downtown area. A scheduled cannon fire, artillery salute, and military aircraft flyover is a scheduled part of the inauguration ceremony. There is no risk to public safety.

Streets near Capitol Square will close Saturday, Jan. 17 for the inauguration of Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger. Closures start at 7 AM Saturday and roads will reopen around 4 PM.
