But this is kind of proving the point. If your argument is literally “it’s bad because it isn’t 1:1,” then you’re not really criticizing the writing. You just don’t like the fact that they changed it.
You’re not explaining why the changes to Sephiroth don’t work, why the new material hurts the story, or why any of these ideas fail on their own. It just comes back to “OG did it this way, so they should’ve left it that way.” At that point, whether a change is actually good or bad doesn’t even matter because you already decided changing it was the problem.
“Don’t change it. Leave it how it was.” Okay, but then there’s really nothing to debate. If changing anything automatically makes it worse, you’re not judging whether the changes actually work, you decided they were bad the moment they were different.
The “Friend Simulator” comment really sums up my problem with Sebby’s “criticism.” He doesn’t even try to engage with what the scene is doing. He just decides it’s “utterly pointless,” and somehow that turns into psychoanalyzing the people who enjoy it.
Cloud and Tifa are literally just talking about food, Claudia’s cooking, and memories of home. It’s a small character moment that adds to their shared history. But none of that is actually engaged with. It basically stops at “I don’t care about this, therefore it’s pointless.”
And I feel like that’s most of these videos at this point. “Cringe.” “Disney.” “Fanfiction.” “This wasn’t in the original.” Okay...but where’s the actual argument? Why is it bad? What is the scene trying to accomplish? Why doesn’t it work? Those questions barely seem to matter because his personal interpretation of FFVII is already treated as the answer.
Then when other people actually do find meaning in these scenes, instead of engaging with their interpretation, suddenly they’re shippers or using fictional characters for their “social fix.” At some point you have to actually make an argument instead of treating your own preferences as self-evident facts and then making assumptions about everyone who disagrees.
I've seen a lot of discussion about what was said in this video but very few discourse about the "criticism" brought up in this one.
My biggest issue with these videos isn't that you prefer the original. There are plenty of things OG does better. It's that a lot of these aren't really arguments, they're personal preferences presented as objective criticism.
"This wasn't in the original." "This is cringe." "This feels like Disney." "Who asked for this?" None of that actually explains why something is poorly written. Showing OG and Rebirth side by side proves they're different. It doesn't prove one is objectively worse. And saying anyone who thinks Rebirth captures the spirit of FFVII is "objectively wrong" leaves no room for an actual discussion. You've already decided your interpretation of what FFVII should be is the correct one, and disagreement becomes ignorance, nostalgia, shipping, coping, etc. As you, and many of your followers have been very adamant about.
Gongaga is a perfect example. The entire location was OPTIONAL in OG and contained maybe a few minutes of story. Of course turning it into a mandatory region requires expansion.
Cissnei? Established continuity from Crisis Core, and new players aren't expected to recognize her the game literally introduces her to Cloud as someone he doesn't know. But, if you played Crisis Core, the prior knowledge of the character adds dramatic irony. It's an example of 'layered continuity.'
Weapons? The OG barely builds them up at all. The Gast/Ifalna explanation is completely missable, and otherwise you get the major explanation basically right before they awaken. Rebirth has already hinted at Weapon before Gongaga and is developing an established concept: the Planet has its own defense mechanisms. Weapons are an enormously important piece of OG lore that receives remarkably little buildup before the Weapons awaken. Rebirth is establishing the Planet's defense mechanisms earlier. An expansion of already established lore, does not diminish anything presented in the original game.
Tifa entering the Lifestream isn't "doing the Disc 2 sequence early" either. Cloud's identity isn't reconstructed. Zack's role isn't revealed. The infantryman reveal doesn't happen. The Mt. Nibel truth isn't uncovered. It shares imagery with that sequence because it's clearly building toward it. OG itself does surprisingly little to establish some of Cloud and Tifa's shared childhood memories before the Lifestream sequence, and their relationship can be pretty thin depending on how often Tifa is even in your party. Expanding that setup isn't inherently bad storytelling just because OG didn't do it.
You argue that the Gongaga memorial makes Shinra 'softer' and even say it feels like they're "trying to make Shinra the good guys." But the scene itself says Shinra neglected the reactor until it catastrophically failed, killing people, and then explicitly says their memorial "doesn't buy absolution." A corporation causing a disaster through negligence and then publicly trying to repair its image doesn't make it good. If anything, that's a perfectly believable extension of corporate villainy. You can prefer OG Shinra's more openly callous portrayal, but that's different from Rebirth making them the good guys.
Ultimately, that’s my biggest issue with your "criticisms." Too often you don’t explain why a change is bad, you point out that it’s different, call it cringe, Disney, or fanfiction, and treat your interpretation of the original as objective fact. That completely undermines what the Remake trilogy is actually trying to accomplish through expansion, foreshadowing, deeper characterization, and established continuity. You’ve created a standard where the original is automatically correct, and any deviation or expansion is automatically a flaw, and disagreement means someone simply doesn’t understand FFVII. That isn’t critical analysis, it’s personal preference dressed up as objective authority.
@no_rhythmx@Cactuarian It doesn’t make sense either lol. If I never played the original game how would I have played the Remake with nostalgia goggles.
And I have played og FF7 btw @Cactuarian People are allowed to like both things, you lame grifter
@DarrylRicardo17@DastardlyDood@Cactuarian The song. The song itself is the main theme of the game. Just like how “Hollow” was for Remake. “No Promises to Keep” which is the only song that is performed in the 2 games, is the main theme of the game.
Yes. I would call that fucking stupid.
I wouldn’t call it a contradiction unless it contradicted something established in the OG.
That is the distinction you have somehow missed for the last hour.
New lore can be good.
New lore can be bad.
New lore can be stupid.
New lore can be unnecessary.
None of those things automatically make it a contradiction.
@zheizien@Cactuarian THE GI ARE THE EXCEPTION.
That’s literally my point.
OG: “There are exceptions.”
OG: “The Gi couldn’t return to the Lifestream.”
OG: never explains why.
Rebirth: explains why.
How are you this close to understanding the argument and still missing it?
you literally just explained what expanded lore is.
OG: The Gi cannot return to the Lifestream. It doesn’t explain why.
Rebirth: The Gi are not from this Planet, and that is why they cannot return.
Yes, “the Gi are aliens” and “foreign life cannot return” are NEW information.
New information is not a contradiction.
Zered, the OG literally says the Gi couldn’t return to the Lifestream. I just showed it to you.
The OG does not explain why.
Rebirth explains why.
Rebirth takes that unexplained fact from 1997 and gives it an explanation.
If that’s a “100% retcon,” then show me what established OG fact was changed.
Not what the OG didn’t explain. What was changed?
@zheizien@Cactuarian Ok, so here’s OG lore. The Gi are on the planet in Cosmo Canyon…They are on the planet…All life ON the planet returns to the lifestream…so explain why Bugenhagen says this.
I replied to the wrong post, so here it is again:
“Remade defense force cope” isn’t an argument, Zered. It’s what you say when someone challenges your claim and you don’t have an answer.
“All life in the universe is the same” does NOT say “all life in the universe returns to THIS Planet’s Lifestream.”
Bugenhagen says living things possess spirit energy. He then describes this Planet’s cycle: life is born, dies, and returns to the Planet.
The Gi are also living beings with spirit energy. Rebirth says their spirit energy did not originate from this Planet, so they cannot return to it.
Expanded lore to a concept that existed 30 years ago does not make it “fan fiction” or a contradiction.
But since you said Rebirth directly contradicts the OG. Quote where the OG says alien life from another world returns to THIS Planet’s Lifestream.
Show me the contradiction

Zered…
Bugenhagen: “The spirits that RETURN TO THE PLANET…”
Then: “when they die [they] once again RETURN TO THE PLANET.”
Then literally: “Of course there are exceptions.”
Stated in Rebirth: You must come from the lifestream to Return to it.
Rebirth: The Gi cannot return to this Planet because they never came from it.
Your screenshot doesn’t contradict Rebirth. You literally posted the basic concept Rebirth expanded on.
Also, no shit the OG doesn’t say “the Gi are aliens who can’t return to the Lifestream.”
That’s the NEW AND EXPANDED LORE.
He understands what the games are, played them, and enjoyed them. He didn’t tell you that you had to like them. He didn’t insult you for disliking them. He just reached a different conclusion than you did.
Yet apparently that’s enough for you to quote tweet him and call him stupid. But Remake fans are the problem right?
@Cactuarian New fan plays Remake, goes back and finishes OG, decides they prefer Remake.
Response: “Opinion invalid 🤡”
But somehow it’s Remake fans who supposedly can’t tolerate different opinions.
“Singing and dancing in every scene.”
Across two entire games there are TWO notable dance sequences: Cloud at the Honeybee Inn and the Gold Saucer performance in Rebirth. And ONE major singing performance: Aerith singing her own song at the fucking Gold Saucer, which is literally the game’s main theme.
Zered, read what I actually wrote, then read your first four words in response.
“My opinions are correct.”
THAT is the hypocrisy.
Do you seriously not understand that people agreeing with an opinion doesn’t turn it into a fact? You’re a fan with opinions just like everyone else. Your opinions don’t become facts because you found other people who share them.
And who made you the definitive authority on what the “correct” opinion about FFVII is? We were literally just having a conversation where you didn’t understand how the fucking Lifestream works and started asking me whether people could reproduce in space.
