Canadian steel needs action now. Our producers need the Government of Canada to stand up strong against the United States' 50 per cent tariff on Canadian steel, while stopping dumping with stronger measures at the border and supporting steel workers by championing our domestic transformation.
We are ready, willing and able to build Canada's future nation-building projects and continue to support the many industries that our producers feed, but we need immediate action to ensure we will be here to achieve that.
Very well said @Catherine_CSPA ! Canada has an opportunity to recapture its own domestic steel market with timely policy that applies tariffs on steel products from countries with active CITT injury findings against them - the unfairly traded imports hurting CDN investment & jobs
Prime Minister @MarkJCarney and President Trump had their first meeting in Washington today. CSPA's President and CEO, @Catherine_CSPA offered early reactions to their meeting in an interview with @CBCNews:
"The 232 [tariffs] on steel is going to be hard," said the CSPA's Catherine Cobden. "And we need to be making changes at home that will help our industry and reduce our reliance on the United States."

This paper has been a long time coming! Grateful to author @ExnerPirot for her solid work on this piece and to all the experts and First Nations leaders we worked with to understand the issues. Energy security is also about having reliable, affordable energy in your home - too many in Canada don't have this and it is time to make change.

.@AlgomaSteelInc and @Tenaris are world-class companies that have created good jobs for workers in Sault Ste. Marie. And today I had some great conversation about how we are levelling the playing field for North American workers with tariffs on Chinese EVs, steel, and aluminum.
➡ Did you know - today, electricity meets only 20% of Canada’s energy needs, while 80% comes from natural gas, petroleum, and other fuels?
Canada's current electricity strategy's proposes electricity to provide that other 80% - a massive challenge. Some industrial processes can't be electrified, and the electricity needed for the rest doesn’t exist. Estimates suggest it will cost $50-60 billion per year to reach the required 350 GW capacity by 2050, more than doubling current levels.
📰Read Shannon A Joseph's opinion for the Financial Post "The Bill is Coming for Net Zero — and It's Big", where she explores the financial reality behind Canada's net-zero push. "The question isn't just 'Can it be done?' but 'Who pays?' Canadians will bear the cost through higher rates or taxes."

The Canadian economy cannot afford disruptions like this, the parties must find an agreement prior to the deadline or the government must step in with a resolution. @cme_mec@CSPA_ACPA
Together, CME, @CdnChamberofCom, @BizCouncilofCan & @CFIBNews are calling on the govt to prevent a rail stoppage. Waiting is no longer an option; the time to act is NOW. This is not about siding with either party. It is about standing up for Canadians: https://t.co/orqir4emGK
A strong Canadian steel industry means thousands of great union jobs. That is why we are committed to protecting the sector from unfair competition. Great to meet with steel industry leaders to discuss how we can accomplish this.
