The claim of contradiction between Matthew 27:5 and Acts 1:18 assumes both passages are giving the same level of detail about Judas’ death. But they are actually complementary, not contradictory.

Matthew 27:5 says Judas “went and hanged himself.”
That describes the initial act of suicide.

Acts 1:18 describes what happened afterward: Judas’ body fell, and his body burst open.

A very common and historically reasonable harmonization is this:

* Judas hanged himself (Matthew).
* Later, either the rope or branch broke, or his body was left exposed for some time.
* His corpse fell and ruptured on rocky ground (Acts emphasizes the gruesome outcome).

So Matthew focuses on the method of death, while Acts focuses on the physical aftermath and public consequence.

This is not unusual in ancient reporting. Two witnesses can describe the same event by highlighting different stages without contradicting each other.

Even skeptics like Bart Ehrman acknowledge that ancient accounts often compress or expand details depending on emphasis.
