Customer asks to cancel his account. Sure! Done. No hassle, no questions.

I proceed to additionally offer him a refund for the current period, which had started just a few days earlier.

He does not respond to this. A few days pass. Suddenly, he opens a chargeback with his bank.

Some people I'll never understand. 🤷‍♂️

For those who don't know why this matters:

- A refund is quick and easy for everyone involved. No paperwork, no fees, no fines. Nothing.

- A chargeback has serious consequences for both the customer and the vendor.

Customer:

- Needs to present evidence to his bank.
- Will be marked as higher risk by the payment processor, potentially causing rejection by other merchants.

Vendor:

- Needs to provide counter-evidence.
- Pays a fee/fine for processing the chargeback.
- Risks paying a higher processing fee on all their future transactions.

Innocent by-standers - yes they may be affected too:

- Both the vendor and the payment processor may start considering other customers with a similar profile as higher-risk and decline some of their payments.

So please - to make life easier for everyone - simply ask your vendor for a refund before opening a chargeback.
