In last week’s leadership training with @jillberry102 and @GirlsonBoardnet - I was asked why advertise and how advertising could be more effective. This is a neat summary that still stands today…
@JodieRobins@jillberrywrites how many books have you read this month?! I’m a couple ish (both your recommendations!), as I can’t remember when Dec ended and Jan began in book reading terms!
Director of Communications, Admissions and Marketing at King's College Wimbledon: a brilliant opportunity... contact me to discuss, or please share so people don't miss this chance... thanks! https://t.co/k91TkpaQKQ
‘Believe in an uncertain expert’…despite a bit of experience, there are often many diff answers or approaches - so when I’m asked ‘what’s best’ for marketing a school, I’ll often be ‘uncertain’ because it’s all about context, not predetermining a solution, but helping find one
Interesting 2010 study from Karmarkar - when an expert expresses a minor degree of uncertainty they become more persuasive
In the excellent Messengers by @scienceofyes
I have a request if you teach in a selective school: I teach and mentor an extraordinarily bright young man who is well on his way to a scholarship at a very exclusive public school for sixth form. An interview is coming up. What are my best bets in helping him prepare? Pls RT!
Evolution of marketing- brilliant as ever from the Marketoonist! But in the schools world I’d switch the 80’s from TV ad to prospectus & in the 20’s (so far) it’s been about hanging out at virtual events & creating virtual experiences
(I’d add ‘brand’ videos in the 10’s too!)
@jillberry102 I absolutely concur (the bit about spending time with people you find energising!)
As always I’ve come away revived and with multiple book recommendations! Jill is my go-to source for brilliant books (and sage advice about all things schools!)
Half term reading anyone? I can heartily recommend Jill's book. Yes, I'm biased as she is a great friend... but I'm still not sure if I forgive her for making me cry (in a good way) whilst reading my favourite, The Dresser!
Very exciting moment today when the post was delivered…. A copy of Jill Berry’s brilliant book! I’ve loved reading and discussing it with Jill and to now see it IRL is fab! Get yourself a copy (available on Amazon) for some great summer reading…!
Looking forward to hosting tonight's Marketing Hotseat for the Leading an Independent School (LIS) training course with Jill Berry and Andrew Hampton. We'll hopefully cover a lot of ground in all areas of School Marketing - strategy & tactics - in communications and admissions!
Interesting as schools can become silos (esp if large) with curriculum areas & support staff often in different locations. Common rooms/spaces (& the time to be there) are vital for collab & conversation. This was all v limited by covid. Where’s your schools ‘serendipity space’?!
Yale’s database shows companies that are boycotting Russia “from A (total withdrawal) to F (digging in). It’s that F list, of some 160 companies, that should draw global ire from marketers & consumers alike” This “is not a failure to act, it’s a recalcitrant statement of support”
We must turn our backs on brands like @redbull@MitsubishiUK@LACOSTE and @Lenovo that continue to trade in Russia. Glory to Ukraine! Shame on all those who work at these companies. My column in Marketing Week: https://t.co/dXdOyoV8jn
Something wonderful to start the week….
(And I’m thinking I may begin starting some letters and emails with this power intro… “I’m of a fearsome mind to…”)
Wow… this is absolutely worth a read…
1. Covid ‘changes’ to customer behaviours need to be reviewed through a longer term lens
2. The cult of overstating marketing change can be (deliberately?) bedazzling/distracting - esp if you haven’t got marketing training or knowledge
Lovely piece by @markritson on marketing's obsession with change and why we should focus more on "the brown lines of continuity"

Interesting reading for your English departments and/or Librarians too… ‘balancing the books’ via @NoSchoolSexism - summarised by @CCriadoPerez as “maybe schools could stop reinforcing this outdated and frankly misogynistic cycle”
'Experiments show making just one claim makes that message more effective, but three is the optimum number for driving product preference.'
@rshotton & @Willlloyd on why 3 is the magic number for product claims
