Mixtape: Impressions

Mixtape is an interactive movie that took me just under 3 hours to finish.

I found the art direction, and mixture of stop motion-like animation in the characters a nice touch.

However, this experience is not a video game. Yes, you move around and there are some button presses occasionally, but you spend the vast majority watching it unfold in front of you.

This is what movies do.

Combine the non-interactivity with characters I didn’t resonate with, and music I’ve never thought was much more than fine, and a story I can understand can feel nostalgic to some, but just felt bland to me.

Ultimately, Mixtape isn’t a game for me, but I play these games objectively in hopes it does something to change my frame of thought.

Mixtape didn’t. It made me question what people perceive as an actual video game versus a movie you watch with a controller (or a mouse/keyboard).

Mixtape also deepened the confusion many have with media like IGN who rate games like this a masterpiece while we’ve seen how they rate games like Mouse P.I, Replaced, Crimson Desert, Stellar Blade, Black Myth: Wukong and so many others.

Video games are clearly graded by the media with different standards depending on the game and how the wind blows; and this is why no one takes scores from them seriously. #annapurna #mixtape #ign
