@cbenderatl Preservationists aren’t indiscriminately trying to save every old building at all costs. But when public or private entities ignore plans and laws to demolish historic structures and those that are eligible for historic status, it’s worth putting up a fight.
@cbenderatl Kell Hall was reportedly not eligible for listing on the State/National Register. Since the State owned the building, the City would not have been able to do anything to stop demo. However, GSU did have to thoroughly document its history prior to demo. https://t.co/hxlrYQA9Xz
@Eli_403 @ThreadATL@Therealeveplumb No one here is trying to halt development. There are ways to handle @Margaritaville’s trash that don’t require the demolition of this historic multi-genre recording studio. (Neely Plumb was in a jazz band. Blues and gospel/spirituals were also recorded there.)
@nintendobenzo@ThreadATL@atlurbanist Yes and no. They SHOULD have had the authority but the previous mayor’s city attorney signed an agreement w/o council’s knowledge that compromised that authority.
Official word from @GeorgiaSHPO yesterday is that 152 Nassau has been preliminarily determined eligible for listing on the #NationalRegisterofHistoricPlaces! Listing would make the property eligible for tax incentives if the developer chooses to follow preservation standards.
