After discussing Evangelicals' support for Trump, I'm curious as to whether Hillary Clinton garnered such wide support from large religious groups as well. I think this is important for an analysis of how religion played a role in the results of the election. #REL2121S18

@jakeknorrrr This seems to be pretty accurate. Once again, I think we can see an attempt at making the U.S. a "Christian nation" in the Religious Rights movement. But I think the fact that they ultimately failed to take over political power demonstrates failure of such attempts. #REL2121S18

I'm curious about how Pat Robertson was recieved amongst the female population. I can't imagine he was very popular considering some of his largely patriarchal standpoints. #REL2121S18

@denniserel2121 I think they were well aware of the trouble that their kids got into but maybe wanted to deflect from the possibility that those actions resulted from the way the kids were raised and/or mental issues that might give the families a negative image. #REL2121S18

The book says that FDR belonged to a denomination that was historically known to use alcohol sacramentally and recreationally, but how much influence did this actually have on the repeal of the 18th Amendment on prohibition? #REL2121S18

Maybe the reason so many people who identified with a religion weren't in church records was that they felt pressured to claim they were religious. Back in highschool, I always claimed to be Christain yet I never went to church and knew nothing about the religion. #REL2121S18

@BrookeBt17e Honestly, this can be broadly applied to "mainstream religion" like Christianity as well. Think about it, the bible was written by man, yet so many people trust in it because people claimed they were the words of some higher being who created the universe. #REL2121S18

@saramgipson I agree and while watching it, I couldn't help but feel like he knew what was coming and was letting everyone know that he would accept it without fear. He said he had the desire to live a long life but also said he was no longer going to worry about it. #REL2121S18

When watching the documentary about cults, I felt like one of the largest appeals of them was the opportunity to escape one's individual responsibilities. Especially considering a large majority of the people who joined were college-aged. Honestly, I don't blame them. #REL2121S18

Carnegie's carefully constructed beliefs on wealth seem to follow a seemingly common trend of religious leaders manipulating ideas to suit their individual purposes. They often preach about morals and thinking of others, yet their own motives can be seen as selfish. #REL2121S18

@katlynrel2121 Can't this also be said for the Social Gospel movement or "social Christianity"? If the supporters' true purpose was to try and get the working class into their churches and convert them, it seems this could also be considered an attempt at a Christian nation. #REL2121S18

@klc15m I do think people would be more mindful of nature, but I also think that there are too many factors to take into consideration, like population issues, when it comes to the world being "cleaner". #REL2121S18

When discussing the writings of famous transcendentalists I couldn't help but think about the poem "Thanatopsis" by William Cullen Bryant. I believe it portrays some transcendentalist ideas as it places large emphasis on nature within the cycle of life and death. #REL2121S18

@linderc23 I actually had the same thought in class on Thursday. I remember learning about how many people would accuse women as witches simply because they inconvenienced or bothered them in some way. Basically, they were petty and wanted to blame others for their issues.#REL2121S18

While talking about evolution and religion I was reminded of a friend who used to say she didn't believe in evolution. At the time she went to a private Christian school and I'm curious as to whether the tension evolution caused in some religion is still relevant today#REL2121S18

@HaleyConningto1 Honestly, a lot of terms are hard to define because people are free to use words in whatever way suits them best. I see your point, but I don't think this issue is specific to religion. Interpretations vary too much to assign definite definitions to everything.#REL2121S18

It's interesting that pro-slavery Southerners often used appearances of slavery in the Scriptures to defend their convictions, even though the majority of it was Caucasian slavery. This illustrates how much interpretations depend on underlying purposes. #REL2121S18
