@whalfon00 I agree. I think touching on how they are treated in American society today would have been interesting. I feel like there is a lot that is probably not mentioned, since there are still plenty of hate groups in society. #REL2121S18
#REL2121S18 allowed me to think on both sides of an argument. I’m grateful that it exposed me to new information that was always kept on the down low in other classes. I enjoyed the class a lot!
@henryfsurel That is so true. I never made that connection. I find it interesting that Cleaver is somewhat ridiculed for this, but Franklin is praised and seen as an intellectual because of his openness to different religions. #REL2121S18
I find it very interesting that Pentecostalism’s saw a huge change in their leadership, organization, and class distinctions when it became popular in the South. Did this cause a great divide between Pentecostals when the change first began?#REL2121S18
@hannahwaters31 I agree. I feel as if some people didn’t take the time to understand what was fully going on, or to question it. I think they just ran with it because they didn’t understand the new things that their kids were taking interest in. #REL2121S18
I wonder if people still fear Satanism today, even though it is widely described as a parody religion. I definitely see characteristics of the panic still when it comes to parents fearing certain traits in their kids as being “odd”. #REL2121S18
@carlinapfsu I definitely agree. Many of the background information mentioned in the book discussed issues that I had never even thought about. It definitely opened my eyes up about the actions of the FBI and other powerful organizations. #REL2121S18
When watching the video of the Unarius Academy of Science, I felt as if the religion was more of a publicity stunt. Out of all the UFO religions that we learned about, I believe they used the Hollywood glamour and special effects to gain a following. #REL2121S18
@kec16f I agree. I definitely think that cults were more disirable to people who had a detached relationship with their already controlling parents. This worked in the cult’s favor and the act of deprogramming just pushed their kids further away. #REL2121s18
I believe that deprogramming and following a cult’s beliefs are very similar. Neither want people to think as individuals and both press heir beliefs on the person in an extreme way. #REL2121s18
The Battle Creek Sanitarium interests me a lot due to it being viewed almost as a detox facility for the rich. However, I wonder if the people who visited actually came for religious reasons tied to Seventh-Day Adventism or just for a luxurious health vacation. #rel2121s18
@marypreligion I agree with this, but I feel as if today’s trends lack some of the religious aspects that Seventh-Day Adventists strived for. I definitely agree that the spike of vegetarians in today’s society connects to their beliefs the most. #rel2121s18
@TandHoney22 I agree with you. It seems as if people felt more trusting of nature than they did of the church during a time of a lot of skepticism. I wonder what the leaders in transcendentalism would think if they were born in a different time. #REL2121S18
Today’s discussion of transcendentalism made me question where our world would be if more people followed these beliefs on nature. I wonder if the world would be a cleaner place and if we would be more mindful of nature and preserving it. What do you think? #REL2121S18
@CaeliCormier This is a really interesting question that I haven’t thought of before. I have a feeling they had some sort of mutual respect for each other but they probably didn’t work too close to one another due to their beliefs being very different from each other. #REL2121S18
The subject of scape goats in class today definitely reminded me of the War on Terrorism and how we consistently blame people of the Islamic faith for the radical individuals amongst them. This isn’t fair but it is a central theme seen throughout modern America. #REL2121S18
@vinny_spitzer I agree. I think that they want every person to be able to have control over any sort of out of body feeling other than the one they have with God. But it certainly doesn’t add up. #REL2121S18
I believe a utopian society’s views on sexuality were shaped primarily by the individual who is in charge of the society. This can be seen greatly through Smith Jr.’s mormon society who was against polygamy one day and for it whenever Smith said so. #REL2121S18
Today’s society greatly confuses Muslims. Though there are radical groups within each religion, I believe it’s important to know the history behind the beliefs that us Americans have today. Tuesdays lesson opened my eyes to things I never knew about Islam and America. #REL2121S18
