“We could have been in a better place now if we had been able to have that dialogue ten years ago.”

That was Dr Mary-Ann Stephenson, Chair of the EHRC, answering Rosie Duffield’s question on what service providers should now be doing to support women better.

And she is right.

For years, women who tried to defend legal boundaries around single-sex spaces were vilified, smeared and humiliated. They were called bigots for saying what the Supreme Court has now confirmed in law: sex matters.

The “punch a TERF” rhetoric was not just unpleasant. It was threatening. It told women that if they spoke up for their own rights, safety and dignity, they could expect abuse, intimidation and social punishment.

Now the EHRC is saying clearly that women must be able to access single-sex services where they need them, particularly when recovering from male violence, when vulnerable, undressed, sleeping, or receiving intimate care.

It also says that failure to provide single-sex services may amount to indirect sex discrimination against women.

That is a serious statement.

This was never just a “culture war”. It was about women’s rights, women’s safety, women’s dignity, and whether public bodies were prepared to listen before the courts had to force reality back into the room.

We could have been in a better place ten years ago.

But women were not listened to. They were shouted down.

Now the law has spoken.

I do know that. Thank you. But we need more men to voice their opinions, stand up for women, as sadly many keep their heads down & say ‘not their problem’. It’s all our problem if women & girls are becoming less safe & losing their rights & opportunities. These are your wives, daughters & mothers

Women’s sport is not a consolation prize for mediocre males with a body dysmorphia. Biological females, all of them, from grassroots, to recreational, to pathways & elite deserve fair safe sport free from all males. We are ALL worthy of the equality act protections

I grew up in an era when mainstream women’s magazines told girls they needed to be thinner and prettier.

Now mainstream women’s magazines tell girls that men are better women than they are.
