He is running out of time at the Staten Island ACC.

The Timeline:

5/5/2023: Adopted and lived with his family for 3 years.

6/12/2026: Returned solely because his owner was moving. His owner stated he lived with another dog, a cat, and kids, had absolutely NO bite history, and explicitly said regarding behavioral concerns: "None, my dog is the best!"

6/15/2026: Adopted out again.

6/20/2026: Brought back after just 5 days, after the new adopter reported a fight with their resident dog and a scratch on their finger.

In the shelter, Balto has displayed perfect behavior.

We have to ask: Should more weight be given to the family who knew and loved him successfully for 3 years? Or to an adopter who had him for only 5 days? If a dog who never had issues before only leaves a scratch — is that a true bite that should end his life?

Not destructive. Not panicked. Just sitting. Waiting. Doing what he had always taught them to do. They came to our shelter with nothing. No records. No vet history. No family contact. Just each other. And one old tennis ball that somebody thought to grab on the way out. That was eleven days ago. Every morning they sit at the kennel door and wait. Every time they hear footsteps they both stand up. Every time those footsteps pass — they go back and lie down together. They don't know he's not coming. They just know he always came back before. Max is 6. Buddy is 5. Both healthy. Both gentle. Both heartbreakingly good dogs. Neither one will do well separated. They have never spent a night apart. They were somebody's whole world. Otis & Milo were left behind at an abandoned house with no food or water. The electricity and water had been shut off for over a month. 💔

Milo is severely emaciated, and Otis is suffering from mange. Despite everything they've endured, they're finally safe.
While I was swapping out Milo's food container for a shallower one so he could reach his food more easily, he thought I was taking it away. My heart broke. No dog should ever have to fear their next meal.

Thankfully, those days are over. Milo will never have to wonder if his food is being taken away again.

These boys are now safe with 2nd Life Animal Rescue, but they still need your support. Please share their story, and if you're able, consider donating to help with their care.
