For three years the father of my two sons, and Pakistan’s former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, has been brutally penalised by his political opponents, in a personal vendetta by Army Chief, Asim Munir,  which according to the UN,  amounts to torture and which  is now taking a potentially fatal toll on his physical and mental health. 

He has endured 3 years of solitary confinement. For nearly ten months now his family has been denied contact with him. He has been deprived of the most basic human contact, denied access to books, lawyers and doctors.

The international human-rights standards are unequivocal. Under the UN’s Nelson Mandela Rules, solitary confinement lasting more than 15 consecutive days is prohibited and amounts to torture.

He has endured this treatment not for 15 days, but for three years.

Pakistan’s own Supreme Court has now intervened: ordering comprehensive  medical treatment, access to his personal doctor, regular family visits and twice-weekly calls with his sons.

Yet those orders are being defied.

This is no longer simply a Pakistani political matter. It is a human-rights emergency.

He has deep and lifelong ties to Britain. He studied at Oxford University, captained Oxford University cricket and spent years playing county cricket in England. His relationship with this country stretches back more than half a century. His charitable activities were internationally recognised, and  include building the only free cancer hospital in Pakistan as well as a university.

His sons, my two boys, Sulaiman and Kasim, are British citizens. They have been forced to watch their father’s health decline from thousands of miles away, prevented from visiting him, denied visas, publicly threatened by government officials with arrest themselves, and even denied court-mandated regular phone calls. 

I have repeatedly appealed to the UK government to intervene. Purported attempts at back channelling have evidently failed. The previous Foreign Secretary @DavidLammy informed me in writing that Britain would not  intervene if my sons, British citizens, are arrested when they travel to Pakistan to visit their father. 

@FCDOGovUK: Britain must now speak out publicly and unequivocally. Demand that Pakistan comply with its own Supreme Court;  restore Imran Khan’s medical access, his right to see his family, end his prolonged isolation and uphold his fundamental human rights.

Pakistan is a Commonwealth country. Britain has a long and proud tradition of standing against arbitrary detention, inhumane treatment and the denial of fundamental rights. Those principles mean very little if we invoke them only selectively and neglect them when inconvenient.
This an appeal to the new Burnham government  to please now do the right thing.

I’m deeply saddened to hear the news of him losing vision in his eye. I hope he gets the best treatment and I’m wishing him a speedy recovery.

عمران خان صاحب پاکستان کے مقبول اور عوامی اعتماد رکھنے والے قبول ترین لیڈر ہیں اور پاکستان تحریک انصاف اس وقت ملک کی سب سے بڑی سیاسی جماعت کی حیثیت رکھتی ہے۔ ایسے میں ڈی جی آئی ایس پی آر کی جانب سے پاکستان کے ایک مقبول سیاسی قائد اور سابق وزیرِاعظم کے بارے میں سیاسی نوعیت کے اور حقائق کے برعکس بیانات نہ صرف ایک ریاستی ادارے کے وقار کے منافی ہیں بلکہ جمہوری اقدار اور آئینی روح کے ساتھ بھی سنجیدہ مذاق کے مترادف ہیں۔

یہ بات واضح رہنی چاہیے کہ کسی بھی ممکنہ ملٹری آپریشن کی مخالفت صرف پاکستان تحریک انصاف تک محدود نہیں، بلکہ خیبر پختونخوا کی تمام سیاسی و مذہبی جماعتیں اور ہر مکتبۂ فکر سے تعلق رکھنے والے افراد اس مؤقف پر متفق ہیں کہ ملٹری آپریشن کسی بھی مسئلے کا دیرپا حل نہیں ہوتا۔

مسئلہ صرف یہ نہیں کہ ریاست دہشت گردی کے خلاف سنجیدہ نہیں، مسئلہ یہ بھی ہے کہ فیصلے زمینی حقائق، منتخب نمائندوں، مقامی آبادی اور صوبائی حکومت کو اعتماد میں لیے بغیر کیے جا رہے ہیں۔ زمینی حقیقت یہ ہے کہ آج بھی خیبر پختونخوا کے متعدد اضلاع میں عوام عدمِ تحفظ، معاشی جمود، نقل مکانی کے خدشات اور ریاستی پالیسیوں پر عدم اعتماد کا شکار ہیں۔ کاروبار، تعلیم اور معمولاتِ زندگی بار بار متاثر ہو رہے ہیں، جبکہ مقامی آبادی کو فیصلہ سازی میں شامل نہیں کیا جاتا۔

یہ ایک ناقابلِ تردید حقیقت ہے کہ خیبر پختونخوا میں اب تک 22 بڑے ملٹری آپریشنز اور تقریباً 14,000 انٹیلیجنس بیسڈ آپریشنز کیے جا چکے ہیں، اس کے باوجود دہشت گردی کا مکمل خاتمہ نہیں ہو سکا۔ اس صورتِ حال سے یہ سوال جنم لیتا ہے کہ کہیں نہ کہیں پالیسی سازی اور عمل درآمد میں سنجیدہ خامیاں موجود ہیں۔ ایسے میں بند کمروں میں بیٹھ کر غیر مؤثر پالیسیوں پر اصرار کرنے کے بجائے ایک واضح پالیسی شفٹ ناگزیر ہو چکی ہے، کیونکہ ان ناکام حکمتِ عملیوں پر قوم کے وسائل بے تحاشہ خرچ ہو رہے ہیں اور عوام کی جان و مال کا تحفظ مسلسل خطرے میں ہے۔

اس تناظر میں یہ بنیادی سوال اپنی جگہ قائم ہے کہ آخر اس بار ایسی کون سی ٹھوس ضمانت موجود ہے کہ ایک اور ملٹری آپریشن واقعی پائیدار امن کی بنیاد رکھ سکے گا؟ اگر ماضی کی حکمتِ عملی، بھاری جانی نقصانات اور بے پناہ وسائل کے استعمال کے باوجود مطلوبہ نتائج نہ دے سکی، تو عوام اور ان کے منتخب نمائندوں کو یہ اعتماد کیسے دلایا جا رہا ہے کہ وہی طریقہ کار اس بار مختلف نتائج پیدا کرے گا؟ پالیسی سازی میں شفافیت، واضح اہداف اور قابلِ پیمائش نتائج کے بغیر کسی بھی نئے اقدام سے امن کے بجائے مزید غیر یقینی صورتحال جنم لینے کا خدشہ رہے گا۔

وہ صوبہ جس نے دہشت گردی کے خلاف جنگ میں تقریباً 80 ہزار قیمتی جانوں کی قربانی دی، اس کے عوام اور ان کے جمہوری مینڈیٹ کو دہشت گردی سے جوڑنا نہایت افسوسناک اور تکلیف دہ عمل ہے۔ ایک ریاستی ادارے کے نمائندے کا اس طرح کی منفی سوچ نہ صرف قومی یکجہتی کو نقصان پہنچاتی ہے بلکہ میرے عظیم ملک پاکستان کے استحکام کے لیے بھی نقصانن دہ ثابت ہو سکتی ہے۔

یہ بھی ایک تلخ حقیقت ہے کہ بارہا خبردار کرنے کے باوجود خیبر پختونخوا میں دہشت گردی کو دوبارہ داخل ہونے دیا گیا اور خود ساختہ بیانیوں کے ذریعے اس کے پھیلاؤ میں اضافہ ہوا۔ دو دہائیوں پر محیط مسلسل قربانیوں کے باوجود، ایک صوبے کے عوام کو بے مقصد اور غیر سنجیدہ پریس کانفرنسوں کے ذریعے موردِ الزام ٹھہرانا، ہمارے شہداء اور ان کے لواحقین کی قربانیوں کی صریح توہین ہے، جو کسی صورت قابلِ قبول نہیں۔

پاکستان تحریک انصاف نے بھی اس جنگ میں بھاری قیمت ادا کی ہے۔ پارٹی کے عہدیداران، منتخب نمائندگان اور وزراء دہشت گردی کا نشانہ بنے،کسی کو گولیوں سے شہید کیا گیا اور کسی نے دھماکوں میں جامِ شہادت نوش کیا۔ ایسے میں ایک ریاستی ادارے کے ڈائریکٹر جنرل کی جانب سے غیر ذمہ دارانہ اور غیر مدلل الزامات نہ صرف پاکستان کی سب سے مقبول سیاسی جماعت کے خلاف نفرت کو ہوا دیتے ہیں بلکہ یہ تاثر بھی دیتے ہیں کہ گویا کسی سیاسی قوت کو دہشت گردوں کے رحم و کرم پر چھوڑنے کی خواہش پالیسی کا حصہ بن چکی ہو، جو ایک خطرناک اور افسوسناک سوچ کی عکاس ہے۔

دہشتگردی اور بدامنی کے مسئلے کا دیرپا حل نکالنا ہے تو پریس کانفرنسز اور یکطرفہ فیصلوں کی بجائے خیبرپختونخوا اسمبلی میں تمام سیاسی و مذہبی جماعتوں اور ہر مکتبۂ فکر سے تعلق رکھنے والے افراد پر مشتمل قومی جرگے کے متفقہ اعلامیے پر عمل ہونے دیا جائے- یہ بھی لازمی ہے کہ مستقبل میں فیصلے بند کمروں اور فرد واحد کی خواہشات کی بجائے تمام سٹیک ہولڈرز اور عوام کے منتخب نمائندوں کی بنائی گئی پالیسز کے تحت کیے جائیں۔

In the entire year of 2025 General Asim Munir’s government denied Imran Khan a medical checkup by Dr. Aasim Yusuf, his personal physician. Imran Khan’s family has repeatedly said they do not accept reports by a government medical board and demanded his personal physician be allowed access. On December 12th the @UN Special Rapporteur on Torture @DrAliceJEdwards also urged the military regime to allow Doctors access, citing Imran Khan’s age and injuries from an assassination attempt.

My father has been under arrest for 845 days. For the past six weeks, he has been kept in solitary confinement in a death cell with zero transparency. His sisters have been denied every visit, even with clear court orders allowing access. There have been no phone calls, no meetings and no proof of life. Me and my brother have had no contact with our father.

This absolute blackout is not a security protocol. It is a deliberate attempt to hide his condition and prevent our family from knowing whether he is safe.

Let it be clear: the Pakistani government and its handlers will be held fully accountable legally, morally and internationally for my father’s safety and for every consequence of this inhumane isolation.

I call on the international community, global human rights organisations and every democratic voice to intervene urgently. Demand proof of life, enforce court ordered access, end this inhumane isolation and call for the release of Pakistan’s most popular political leader who is being held solely for political reasons.
