I've been thinking about this a lot recently after listening to Tobi Lütke talk about generalizing skills from video games (to work/building).

We recently hired our first employee, and since we're building analytics for LoL specifically, it made sense to weigh applicants' domain knowledge through rank.

One of our applicants told me they had 5K+ hours in Dota 2 (Immortal), but swapped to League because of their friends. Within a couple of months of swapping games, they were already Master tier.

"I just found my local optimum in Zilean support."

I hired them on the spot.

Reaching a really high rank in a competitive game forces you to learn how to improve, focus on the controllable variables (and ignore the uncontrollable ones), find a niche that works, and continuously adapt. Or at least filters for people who already have those qualities.

Time-to-rank probably matters more than peak rank alone. That said, I would never judge anyone for grinding towards excellence (it took me over 5 years to reach Challenger).
