The chief cause is confusion and error in knowledge, we must first come to grips with the problem of loss of adab, since no true knowledge can be instilled without the precondition of adab in the one who seeks it and to whom it is imparted.

May Allah elevate the ranks of Ustadh Syed Naquib al-Attas as much as he elevated our souls towards Islam.
There is no other scholar than Imam al-Ghazali i hold as dear to my heart as shaykh al-Attas, i owe so much to this man.
One of the greatest muslim thinkers of 21st century, I hope and pray to Allah that his project continues to inspire the muslim world till qiyamah.
Here's a brief overview of how the major muslim thinkers responded to the challenges of modernity, their diagnosis, and methodologies of solutions, this is a simplified breakdown (based on Abder Kader Tayoub's Religion in Modern Islamic Discourse).
𝗮𝗹-𝗔𝗳𝗴𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶, 𝗠. 𝗔𝗯𝗱𝘂𝗵, 𝗥. 𝗥𝗶𝗱𝗮: Islam as social utility, islam is a civilisational unifier for muslims to rebel against other powers, muslims are one nation and should unify for civilisational renewal, and exist with dignity alongside other nations (interdependence), Islam's spirit lies in its ability to inculcate a revolutionary activity, Abduh particularly believing that this can be achieved through science, science being the key to success in modernity, scientific technological progress is a social necessity of modernity and of achieving political ambitions.
𝗦𝗶𝗿 𝗦. 𝗔. 𝗞𝗵𝗮𝗻: Science as theology, scientific principles are the spirit of the universe itself, and the best way of understanding the divine message encoded in nature for true muslim guidance, Muslims need to catch up through embracing the scientific interpretive framework in order to progress the same way as the west, methodological naturalism is synonymous with a true insight into reality.
𝗠. 𝗠𝗮𝘄𝗱𝘂𝗱𝗶, 𝗦. 𝗤𝘂𝘁𝗯: Political sovereignty is the only way through, western values are to be countererd through triumphing politically over them, the value-system is of the conquerer, the decline is due to the imitation of western values, and the hegemony of the western values is due to their marshal subordination of the muslim world, and the muslim weakness is due to stagnation/weakness in ethical conditions and a complicit laziness to think politically with Islamic orientation.
𝗠. 𝗜𝗾𝗯𝗮𝗹: the political, social, and scientific weaknesses are due to psycho-spiritual confusions, the very foundation of modern human (muslim) psyche needs to be recalibrated, the inner sciences have to be integrated not for personal proximity to the divine only, but for manifesting the divine in the external world through self-actualisation of the self onto the reality, Islam's role is to harmonise the philosophical-mystical with the political-social, the decay is due to the atomisation of all these domains.
F. Rahman: Islam has to cultivate an ethico-social community, that is able to create an environment that helps each member of the society in a spiritual alignment with the divine order, rather than a hyper-fixation on top-down political shift, only a bottom-up socio-communal educational approach can bring about an islamic society, islamic social ethics should guide the political rather than vice versa, islam is nothing but for the ethical, as long as a society upholds its moral values, the scientific and political sovereignty aren't necessary.
Here are a couple of charts made throught gpt, for a better understanding.
Al-Attas defines Islamic education:
Recognition and acknowledgement, progressively instilled into man,of
the proper places of things in order of creation, such that it leads to the recognition and acknowledgement of the proper place of God in the order
of being and existence.
