A rape case was dropped 13 days before trial.

Years later, an independent review found it should have gone ahead.

But by then, it was too late.

Here's why that matters.

A woman reported a rape.

Three and a half years later, she was preparing for trial.

Then the CPS dropped the case.

The reason? A sexsomnia defence.

The case would never be heard by a jury.

Most people thought that was the end.

It wasn't.

She requested a Victim's Right to Review.

An independent Chief Crown Prosecutor reviewed the decision.

The conclusion was extraordinary.

The case should never have been dropped.

In fact, the review found it was more likely than not that a jury would have convicted.

But there was a devastating problem.

The CPS had already offered no evidence in court.

Double jeopardy meant the case could never be reopened.

The decision was found to be wrong.

The outcome could not be changed.

So she sued the CPS.

The CPS apologised.

They paid damages.

They changed policy.

And today, there is a pilot scheme that gives victims an option for a review before rape cases are dropped.

That woman was me.

My case can't be put back before a jury.

But others shouldn't have to hear that a case should have gone to trial only after it's too late to do anything about it.

That's why I'm campaigning for victims to have a review before cases are dropped.

And for the current pilot to become permanent.

Not after.

When it's too late.

“Children survived their injuries, only to die of hunger” — A British surgeon’s testimony from inside Gaza’s hospitals

While the world followed the rising death toll coming out of Gaza, British surgeon Nick Maynard stood inside operating rooms in Gaza City, trying to save as many lives as possible. But this time, he discovered that a successful surgery no longer necessarily meant a patient would survive.

Maynard, who volunteered several times in Gaza’s hospitals during the war, said what he witnessed this visit was unlike anything he had seen in four decades of medical work. Children who survived complex surgeries were no longer surviving hunger.

Inside hospitals suffering from severe shortages of food, medicine, and medical equipment, the British doctor saw children weakened by starvation even before their injuries. Some entered operating rooms with frail bodies, visible bones, and pale faces, only to die days later despite successful surgical intervention.

Maynard said the malnutrition he witnessed in Gaza was unlike anything he had seen before, adding that patients’ bodies — especially children’s — were no longer capable of recovering after surgery due to the severe lack of food.

The surgeon’s shock was not limited to scenes of hunger. While working at Nasser Hospital, he and his colleagues received increasing numbers of wounded people arriving from around food aid distribution points. Dozens of injured civilians streamed into emergency wards with gunshot wounds, many of them seeking food when they were shot.

Maynard recalled seeing recurring patterns of injuries, to the point where medical teams could predict the type of wounds before patients even arrived. He said what he witnessed raised profound questions about the circumstances in which these civilians had been injured.

In the burns unit, the tragedy was even harsher. Children with severely burned bodies suffered relentless pain while hospitals ran out of basic painkillers. The British surgeon remembers the faces of children whose suffering he could not adequately ease due to medicine shortages, describing those scenes as among the most haunting memories he will carry.

Maynard stressed that the crisis is no longer only about the wounded, but about an entire healthcare system collapsing under immense pressure. Hospitals that should serve as places of refuge for the sick are operating amid severe shortages of medical supplies, staff, and essential medicines.

After returning to Britain, the surgeon carried with him images and stories he said would stay with him for a long time. As the war continues, he insists that what is happening in Gaza is not merely a temporary humanitarian crisis, but a health catastrophe unfolding before the world’s eyes — where patients are not dying only from their injuries, but because hunger has become a partner in killing them, even after surgery.
