@KrakeJames@evans_cn This is because imo it's a genre fundamentally carried by its aesthetics. Gibson wrote a decent heist story that was seminal because it stumbled on one of the greatest visual settings ever - nihilism + capitalism + Japan was really cool in the 80s
Its legacy is atmosphere
@PikkuProgram As much as I love the cyberpunk genre few people understand it's a fundamentally driven by its aesthetics, which are at their core just nostalgic for how cool Shinjuku looked in the 80s
This post, along with basically all the comments, misses the original appeal of cyberpunk, so I guess I will tap the sign
The lasting appeal of cyberpunk is the aesthetic, which at its core is just the admission that Tokyo looked really fucking cool in the 80s
This is the least interesting and least correct reason for why cyberpunk is compelling to people today. If anything, cyberpunk is ASPIRATIONAL and an escape fantasy, same as any other.
Pretending like it’s “bleak” is complete LARP. People love it and want to be in it.
@strayfromlight@Zennistrad Ugh those books are so fucking good
The opening line of Neuromancer sells the atmosphere of the genre better than anything else has to date
"The sky above the port was the color of television tuned to a dead channel."
The ending of Neuromancer is one of the greatest ever because they successfully create the machine god and instead of it turning into AM it just shows up at Case's apartment and says "hey bro what's up btw aliens exist" and Case just goes "that's cool I guess"
Peak literature
"Cyberpunk always has to have bad endings"
>read foundational cyberpunk literature
>main characters finish the job successfully and live happily ever after
@Ace705Mm So much aura they had to lock it up for the future of the setting to even be possible
And even then it's so cool the writers had to still say it wasn't actually disassembled so it could come back one day
@ilysmuzffr "the F-15's operational ceiling is way beyond what a beam rifle can reach in a vacuu-"
Yeah that's sick bro please look at these shiny lights
@Sound3Reco@goliathmoon1 Thank you for acknowledging like the best underlying story of Unicorn
"Hmm the character given the strongest MS ever achieves the greatest powers of the series as he rejects the corrupted forced role of the newtypes I wonder if there's something there story wise"
