I watched Pastor Jerry Eze’s video a few minutes ago, where he spoke about how difficult the early years of his marriage were. He said his wife’s anger was so intense that he would leave the house because he was genuinely scared of her.

He said he prayed about it one day, and the Holy Spirit told him that everything he was going through was an assignment.

He went on to encourage people to be patient with their spouses.

But honestly, the first thing I asked myself after watching that video was: didn’t you see any red flags while you were dating?

Because sometimes we romanticize bad behaviour because the person eventually changed, became successful, or because the marriage survived it.

Not every horrible behaviour is an “assignment.” Not every toxic situation needs to be spiritualized.

If someone is consistently abusive, manipulative, violent or cruel, we should be able to call it what it is.

A bad person is a bad person. There’s no need to sugarcoat it. People know what they’re doing.
