I am Darkness. I am The Night. I AM………. neither
one of those actually. A jack of all trades and
master of none, but oftentimes better than a
master of one.
Guy Gardner was willing to square up with the strongest metahuman to protect earth but let's a rookie Lantern snatch his chain and take his planet without putting up a fight
Imagine if we got a superman movie where he never wears a suit, they replace lois lane with an oc, it’s not set In metropolis but just a small town area and we never get a single fight scene displaying his powers… am I cooking chat?
James Gunn's response here is quite clever but also telling. Why?
It's telling because he wouldn't be taking time out of his "busy" schedule to write lengthy replies to randos if the criticisms weren't having an effect.
It's clear Lanterns is an Elseworlds show that completely disregards the comics, canon, lore, history, etc.
If you're expecting synergy between the comics and the show, don't. Gunn is not interested.
If you try to justify any creative choice in the show by using the comics as evidence, don't. You're being dishonest if you try.
But what I find clever about James Gunn's response is the weaselly framing.
An ADAPTATION transfers the core story idea and elements from one medium to another. You can change the aesthetics or details, but the core needs to remain intact for any work to be considered an adapatation.
By comparing Hal's screen time in Lanterns to all other live action appearances throughout history, Gunn is indirectly implying that Lanterns is an adaptation, when it is not.
Despite its flaws, the 2011 film is a legitimate adaptation.
HBO's Lanterns (2026) is not an adaptation because it isn't transferring anything except the character names. None of the character personalities are the same, the logistics of the rings and Guardians are not the same, and none of the relationships or histories are the same, and the story isn't in line with any previously published story, including Hard Traveling Heroes.
In short, Lanterns is fanfic. A bad one, imo.
Therefore, the only way to win this argument game is not to play.
If you've been waiting for a proper Green Lantern adaptation, you'll have to keep waiting.
This ain't it.
Nobody is asking for “exact trajectory” of their “favorite comics continuity.”
Most fans would be happy if their favorite DC characters weren’t murdered and used as a skinsuit for Buffalo James Lindelof King to dance in front of them in.
Look overall I like #Lanterns and think it’s a solid show. And Kyle Chandler IS great as Hal.
But if you are a Hal Jordan fan this show will 100% rub you the wrong way and Gunn pretending that’s not true and equating screentime as proof is just Gunn being obtuse.
Probably in the very distant future someone will come along who actually likes DC characters and will deliver movies and shows that are not ashamed of its characters. Yes Lanterns is a good show but they are never beating the "we don't actually like Green Lantern" allegations
Don’t mind if people love #Lanterns — I’ve enjoyed some of it.
But the worst pushback against critics is “OMG sorry if you wanted comic book space laser mutant fights and costumes lmao!!!”
Yeh that IS what I want from a Green Lantern show. If I want True Detective I’ll watch it
@Variety Don’t care. They literally can’t afford to do it. It would bankrupt them. This is a bluff, he knows he’s gonna lose in court.
I can’t tell if Twitter has become full of brain dead idiots or if bots have truly taken over this platform. No way people actually support this merger
