A return to session 1 today, as I started Reasoning Club at a new school. The domino magic was still there but what was really fascinating was seeing progression- the children today did much better at the tasks than when everyone else did them in September.
@BelleValeSchool
Some of the tasks I did today with a group of year 6 from Parklee in Atherton. They are just the most lovely group - hardworking, giddy and excitable, but its all from an enthusiasm about maths!
This is what solo schools are doing in session 3 - all about six! First we investigate multiples of 3, and learn the divisibility rule. Then onto spotting multiples of 6. @Shoreside1234
And here are the tasks from Reasoning Club session 3 - I haven't even done session 2 with some schools yet!
I had to include a picture of the teacher who stepped out of their ppa time to have a go at the task!
@MarklandHill
And this is what we are doing in session 2 at Reasoning Club. For those that don't know - Reasoning Club is aimed at greater depth pupils in year 6. It is intended to develop problem solving, teamwork and independence.

Just a little taster of what Y6 did in session 2. Only managed two pictures as it was frenetic with 45 pupils! I both love it when children don't know the divisibility rule for 3, and when they do - we still go on an exciting mathematical journey!
@MiddlefieldCPS
I've harked on about this before, but it never ceases to amaze me how powerful WEDIK is as a teaching tool. It's a great source of discussion - getting children to explain their understanding, and consequently, as an assessment tool. But also as a plenary.
A rare summer post from us, hot on the heels of our first Summer School!
Nursery to Y5, a complete mixture of abilities but boy did they do well!
Mobius bands, shut the box, 100 square jigsaws, pentominoes, tangrams and cross numbers were loved by all ages
#mathsiseverywhere
And that's it! The last Reasoning Club of the year, and its resultant detritus.
It was won by Westhead Lathom St James with 9 completed tasks. Well done to everyone who took part, both today and for the whole year.
I'll continue to post some tid bits next week before summer.
And the last. We have loved writing these tasks and seeing how pupils approach them. We hope you and your pupils enjoy them too. Let us know how you get on!

It's the last Reasoning Club Challenge at Ormskirk CofE today, so I thought it was about time I shared the Reasoning Club Challenge activities 2025! These are the greater depth tasks: some of them are very tough!
there are ten tasks, so there'll be a couple more posts!

Some more geometry work at Heald Place in Rusholme. Y4 were exploring polyominoes. We looked at monominoes, dominoes and triominoes, then the children had to find all of the tetrominoes. Reflections or rotations were not counted!

I love a good maths display board/working wall; I saw this in a schooI in Liverpool this morning. It reassures me that these ropics are being covered and it does give pupils a few more inroads to success for this Reasoning Club Challenge task.

Shape exploration in Y3 today. We used pentominoes to identify rectangles, hexagons and octagons. We then learnt about decagons and dodecagons! The children got to explore what other shapes they could make by combining pentominoes.

Wonderful work in Y2 at Heald Place, spotting patterns and counting on up to 20,000! One pupil also correctly told me how much to add on to get to 1 million!

And the final 3. Just a reminder these are the whole class tasks.
If you would like a copy of the tasks, follow the link in our profile to the website, where you can sign up to our newsletter. All of the tasks will be sent out in the next couple of weeks. 3 of 3.
Hello twitter! Its that time of year again - here are the Reasoning Club Challenge Tasks 2025. Same as last year, they are split into 2 parts: 1 set for whole class Reasoning Clubs and another for greater depth pupils. First up, whole class tasks, 1 of 3
Next set of tasks, whole class still. Canny followers may notice that some of these tasks have appeared earlier in the year for the greater depth sessions. 2 of 3.
