🚗 General Motors (GM) set up a Mountain View AI center with a team under 20 people, hiring from Google, Meta, Amazon Web Services, and Pixar to modernize factories, vehicles, and racing.

They operate as an internal consultancy that seeds teams in manufacturing, engineering, finance, software, and human resources, and they plan to stay small.

The flagship project is cobots, collaborative robots that help with tough ergonomic tasks using decades of proprietary manufacturing data as training fuel.

Leads include Barak Turovsky, former Google languages product head now chief AI officer, and John Anderson, ex Google researcher and Pixar veteran now AI research director.

Software plumbing includes generative AI coding tools and tighter over the air updates so cars receive fixes and features with fewer failures and shorter cycles.

GM Leadership says the aim is not to copy big tech culture, it is to marry GM strengths in vehicles and supply chain with pragmatic software.
