"He gets us" isn't the enemy of "he saves us."
In fact, Jesus getting us is a part of him saving us. It's not a competition, but rather ideas that interrelate and correspond with one another.
When I post about abuse, which I do for biographical/occupational reasons, people send me harrowing stories.
A person today sent a note about how her aging abuser got dementia. Here's her beautiful, sad, and devastating sentence:
'He was the only one who forgot what he did.'
@PhilipDBunn Letting kids use parks is the first step in their education about respecting and supporting parks.
If preservation is the goal, this is the stupidest idea ever.
Notice how it’s always “the Bible must be taken literally!” until God says, “When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself.”
-Leviticus 19:33-34
Chris Avell, the pastor of Dad's Place in Bryan, Ohio, was arraigned in court on January 11 for charges related to building code violations after he kept his church open to provide warmth and shelter for unhoused individuals. He pleaded not guilty to the alleged violations.
Court documents say that because the building is zoned as Central Business, people aren’t allowed to eat, wash clothes, or sleep there. In a December statement, the chief of the Bryan Police Department told 13 Action News that 'a reasonable amount of time was given for both the tenant and property owner to fix the issues.'
In an interview with local outlet the Village Reporter, Avell stressed that the building isn't a 'shelter, it's a church,' adding that 'we have put in things people can use, like a shower and a small ability to do laundry. Some who found this to be a home for them have stuck around.'
Avell reportedly said he will continue to keep his church doors open through the winter. 'This is what the word of God teaches ... This is how I worship my God,' he told WTOL 11.
He's expected back in court within 30 days of his arraignment date.
Whatever the Lord’s will for each of us in 2024 who follow Jesus, it will exceed our natural strengths, skills, talents, levels of experience, areas of expertise, intellectual acumen and worldly wisdom. The beautiful way Jesus set this faith thing up is that we can’t serve Jesus without Jesus. I pray this for all of us in 2024: more of Jesus.
I was struck today by the fact that I’ve preached Advent & Christmas messages now for 43 years straight and I’m running out of time to tell the story. 43 years isn’t enough. Every year I’m astonished by the wonder of his coming & all the Scriptures say concerning this.
I'd put it this way. I was working this morning on the text and message and just find myself blown away all over again. It's both the simplest message and the deepest most profound mystery imaginable. If I live to be a hundred I wouldn't have time to reach the boundaries of its wonder.
I'm running out of time, not text. The problem with Advent & Christmas messages isn't knowing what to say, it's deciding what not to say - well, at least for this year. How inadequate I am for the task of telling this story of stories, this fulfillment of every promise God made, and the longing of every sin-broken heart. And yet... I can't wait.
Paul helps -
"Oh, the depth of the riches of both the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how unfathomable his ways!" - Romans 11
Over all who mourn
Breaks the dawn of salvation
Darkness reigns no more
For Jesus is greater
He is greater
Angels let your song begin
Here comes heaven
Christ is born in Bethlehem
Here comes heaven
Any recipe I have from a grandmother who was forced to write down a treasured recipe against her will that says “a bit of this” or “until it looks right,” I will now read in this lady’s voice.
