When Martin Luther kicked off the reformation journey , the ordinary citizens went to extremes to hound anyone looking different

Luther had to shift alliances and support the government in the crackdown to restore order

• Initial Sympathy (Early 1525): Luther was sympathetic to the peasants’ economic and social grievances, which were fueled by the Reformation’s emphasis on spiritual equality and critiques of feudal oppression. In his pamphlet Admonition to Peace: A Reply to the Twelve Articles of the Peasants in Swabia (April 1525), he acknowledged their legitimate complaints (e.g., against excessive taxes, serfdom, and enclosure of common lands) and urged both peasants and nobles to negotiate peacefully, drawing on Christian principles of brotherhood and justice.
• Shift to Opposition (May 1525): As the revolt escalated into widespread violence— with peasants forming armed bands, seizing castles, and executing officials—Luther grew alarmed. He viewed the uprising as a betrayal of Christian non-violence and a threat to social stability, which he believed was essential for the spread of the Gospel. In his infamous tract Against the Robbing and Murdering Hordes of Peasants (May 1525), he reversed course dramatically, condemning the rebels as “mad dogs” and exhorting princes and lords to “strike, strangle, and stab, secretly or publicly,” without mercy. He argued that suppressing the unrest was a divine duty to prevent anarchy.
Reasons for the Change
Luther’s pivot was driven by:
• Theological Concerns: He prioritized the Reformation’s survival over radical social change, fearing the revolt would discredit Protestantism by associating it with chaos. He saw the princes as God’s ordained authorities (per Romans 13:1–7), tasked with maintaining order.
• Pragmatic Fears: The uprising risked a total collapse of the German states, potentially inviting foreign intervention (e.g., from the Holy Roman Emperor or Catholic forces). Luther wrote to Elector John of Saxony, emphasizing that peace under authority was preferable to bloody revolution.
• Personal Backlash: His initial moderation drew criticism from both radicals (who wanted more support) and conservatives (who saw him as inciting sedition). The hardening stance appeased the latter while distancing him from Anabaptist and other radical reformers.

Continuing with the tweets on predatory water drilling practices. The drilling contractor’s role is to deliver a hole, not water. If he finds water for you in the process, that is your bonus. This is why a contract drawn by a driller emphasizes that it does not guarantee water, nor its quality.

Some drillers draw a contract that includes an expectation of additional payment upon drilling the open hole to its final depth, before placing the lining pipes. Predatory incident #1. This is unfair to their client because a borehole is not a borehole until all linings are successfully placed. If lining delays due to payment issues, the hole may collapse.

Remember, you do not contract a driller to find water; legally, you contract them to construct a borehole to a specified depth. Whenever I review drilling proposals for clients and encounter payment terms like the ones described, I immediately halt discussions; they are a clear red flag.

Predatory practice #2 is when a driller demands up to 80% payment before mobilization, justifying it by claiming that drilling is a quick process and that they need to have all materials on site in advance. The danger here is that if the drilling yields no water, some contractors simply leave the unused materials with the client, disregarding the fact that the client may have no further use for them. And since the driller had already received 80% upfront, recovering any excess payment or getting a refund for unperformed work becomes nearly impossible, as they include it in the works done as material delivered.

A third, even more insidious Predatory Practice #3 is the driller's knowledge that when a client's site strikes water, the client becomes delirious. They forget that they need to check that the driller has reached the contracted depth. The driller therefore terminates the borehole (water pressure, if a lot, makes it more expensive to drill as the compressor needs more power, hence more fuel, per metre). They, however, claim that they reached the agreed depth and charge likewise. There are other deceptive practices connected with this that I will elaborate on later. Cont'd
