AFREPREN/FWD is a non-profit initiative based in Nairobi, Kenya working on African energy issues - special focus on cleaner energy options for the poor.
@ErickWokabi ππΏ @David If scaled with appropriate differential pricing, charging transport batteries could better utilize under-used late-night power generation capacity and peak solar output, optimizing the overall power asset base.
@BBSimons π― True that more accurate data is needed to guide policy, but I'd argue the exceptional success of Ethiopian Airlines' industry-specific specialized training makes a strong case for prioritizing such focused approaches.
@BBSimons π .. in Kenya, cafes do charge more for soya milk but with a small mark up of say 10-15%. Kind of surprised by the high East Legon surcharge as in my last visit, was thrilled by affordably priced, widely available Ghanian soya milk drinks (Vitamilk, etc) with ubiquitous adverts!
@BBSimons ππΏEssential reading for every African decision maker. Two underrated ET drivers: starting small & scaling incrementally, plus weaving local, regional & global markets into an integrated strategy. Hard to find parallels - underlines the urgency of sharing this case study widely!
@mungaikihanya Key question isn't which product or sub-sector to support, but how to select them & more importantly, who does the selecting. How do you build & mobilize a top technocratic team with the right skills, credibility & high-level backing? @DavidNdii Presidential Advisory Team!
@mungaikihanya The key question isn't which product or sub-sector the State should support, but how to select themβand more importantly, who does the selecting. How do you build and mobilize a top technocratic team with the right skills, credibility, and high-level backing? @david
@CallmeAlfredo Combine commercial (~21%) and distribution/technical losses (~27%) and ECG is losing ~42 units out of every 100 it receives. Cut commercial losses to 2% and technical to a realistic 15% benchmark β and revenue would jump nearly 45%!
@OdrekRwabwogo@MAAIF_Uganda@paceidug ππΏππΏππΏ Great initiative! Rice-fish integration (East Asia model) + coffee by-products for local feeds could work well in Uganda. In this respect, Vietnamβs ~$10B+ fisheries export success worth studying.
@OurWorldInData π― Spain & Portugal use hydro + pumped hydro to balance solar & wind β delivering base load flexibility & storage. This Iberian model has strong potential in many African countries with similar (often better) resources. Direct solar use via agrivoltaics is also promising.
@JonathanSaid1@kopalo π― Key point β 'Teams ready in advance, as windows do not wait.' To build them: a meritocratic filter via rigorous national + civil service exams. East Asia's success drew on this tradition (rooted in imperial examination systems) to create skilled bureaucracies with legitimacy.
@AngelicaOung "East Asia is not a good model for Africa due to institutional differences, notably the historical meritocratic national exams rooted in Imperial exams β one of the keys to East Asiaβs success and mostly absent in Africa. Better models are Mauritius, Botswana & Costa Rica.
@DrKristieLeong Seems even a small amount of mushroom can make a difference which is magnified by intake of green tea! "Women who ate the equivalent of just half a mushroom a day had significantly lower odds of breast cancer. (Thatβs only about 15 shrooms a month!)" https://t.co/K5ybBxFehb
@kyleichan@tejparikh90 Key shared feature of Japan, SK, China & Taiwan: a strong nationwide meritocratic filte largely rooted in Imperial exam traditions. It selects education talent and shapes industrial support allocation. Vietnam has the same strengths and looks like the next breakthrough.
@JonathanSaid1@_miller_mark π― Integrating renewables with industrial/export growth to generate FX is key. Big opportunities in agro & agro-processing: waste-to-heat from export crops (e.g. tea), biofuels to cut oil import bills, and agrivoltaics for horticulture β‘οΈ also reduce transmission investments.
@JonathanSaid1 π― An under-estimated factor is engineering & maintenance (E&M) support services which are important in today's just-in-time manufacturing. Has the added benefit of generating local jobs,
β¬οΈ local tech know-how + supporting other industries. Clustering is key to E&M.
@DrKristieLeong Thx for stairs post. Found 12-week stairs study with doable 20 daily stairs intervention with great resultsππΏeven at 6-months follow-up!. Meyer, P. et al. (2010). Stairs instead of elevators at workplace ..... European Journal of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation
@JonathanSaid1 But in their early stages of dev, employment in agr, forestry, fisheries, mining & related processing industries was significant in New Zealand, Brazil, Chile & some Nordic countries. It is precisely this stage of dev that is most relevant to many Global South countries today.
@hjluks@BrianSuttererMD Surprised that u are not impressed by slow-walking+turns data. 8k daily steps+turns challenges heart + added benefits of turns for lateral/twisting that u rightly emphasize. Only missing item is power which a weekly gym session can address. Not sufficient to stave-off narrowing?
@hjluks@BrianSuttererMD π― but there studies showing that adding turns to a casual stroll bumps it up to moderate walk or close enough in terms of energy expenditure & muscle activation. My hope is that my daily navigation through furniture & toys in my small house bumped it up to a moderate walkπ€πΏ
