Words from Israel Prime Minister Golda Meir:

“In April 1948, I myself stood on the beach in Haifa for hours and literally beseeched the Arabs of that city not to leave.

The Haganah had just taken over Haifa, and the Arabs were starting to run away – because their leadership had so eloquently assured them that this was the wisest course for them to take and the British had so generously put dozens of trucks at their disposal.

“Nothing that the Haganah said or tried, did any good – neither the pleas made via loudspeakers mounted on vans nor the leaflets we rained down on the Arab sections of the town.”

But alas they ignored the advice. Israel survived the war and the Arabs were not allowed to return.
