Massachusetts' overreaching gun laws didn't prevent this shooting but their failed justice system allowed it to happen.
You are on your own, every shooting is a failure of the government to keep citizens safe.
Your option to own and carry firearms is your civil right.

A case of a criminal who was eligible under habitual offender laws to go off to prison for a long time. But he didn't and this week he was spraying bullets on the street.

2014 Conviction (Assault & Battery with a Dangerous Weapon). He was placed on probation, which he was still serving at the time of his next major violent incident.

2020 Shooting (Armed Assault with Intent to Murder). Despite the DA’s recommendation for a 10-12 year stretch, a judge sentenced him to only 5 to 6 years. Crucially, the judge ordered this sentence to run concurrently with his sentence for violating probation on the 2014 assault charge. This meant he served no additional "new" time for the probation violation; the two punishments overlapped, leading to his release just a few years later.

Which then led to yesterday's public shooting.

We'll go into a little more detail in the research project we're currently working on but for all of the get-tough-on-crime laws that were passed in the 1980s and 1990s, prosecutors and judges have found ways to circumvent them.

Quite often prosecutors will use the threat of a three-strike law to negotiate a plea deal and avoid a trial. This causes reduced sentencing, and in some lower-level offenses maybe even reclassification of the crime to something that would not apply as a predatory violent offense.

But as we see with this individual, even judges can game the system to bypass the will of the people in terms of truth-in-sentencing laws, special firearm enhancements, and other dictates of the public.

@regularguyguns Exactly. They need the death to push the agenda. Without the tragic loss of life they don't get the crying mothers, the stories about the victims, the sound bites from the anti gun legislators and an emotional push to ban guns.
No violent "gun deaths" aren't their goal.

The Anti-gun movement's goal is total civilian disarmament. They don't care about your rights, they ignore the thousands to 100s of thousands of people who use firearms to save their lives each year. 90% of "gun deaths" are suicide & gang violence that won't legislation affect.

The sad thing is that if the gun control lobby would focus on community-based "gun violence" prevention strategies, they'd probably get some buy-in from gun owners. Those programs at least recognize that most violent crime's committed by a small group of offenders. But they're intent on these broad policies that restrict the rights of everyone.

When "Idiocracy" stops being an entertaining movie and becomes our reality we end up with politicians who don't understand the Constitution getting elected by citizens who don't understand the Constitution. Civics should be a required classes every year after the 7th grade.

If you're going to argue we can restrict Second Amendment rights because urban communities can't handle having guns in the way "rural Vermont" can, then why wouldn't it also follow we can't do the same with every right?

Warrantless searches wouldn't reduce much crime in most rural areas, but they'd do a lot in cities!

Literacy is dismal in Chicago. Why are we letting its residents vote without a literacy test?

And so on.

Rights are universal. If your area isn't mature enough to handle that liberty, then the response should be fixing your community's failings, not attacking the liberty.

This isn't a new problem. John Adams wrote that

"We have no Government armed with Power capable of contending with human Passions unbridled by morality and Religion. Avarice, Ambition, Revenge or Gallantry, would break the strongest Cords of our Constitution as a Whale goes through a Net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."
