Notes from the #Gophers’ 4-0 win over North Dakota:
• Justen Close’s 25-save shutout was the 11th of his career; it was the first by Minnesota against North Dakota since Nov. 5, 2016 (Eric Schierhorn, 33 saves) and the Gophers’ second-ever shutout at Ralph Engelstad Arena (Kellen Briggs, 23 saves on Oct. 23, 2004)
• Oliver Moore became the first Gopher to score his first-career goal against North Dakota since Travis Boyd did it in Minnesota’s 5-2 win in the 2012 NCAA Regional final
• Justen Close extended his school record with his sixth shutout against a ranked opponent (USCHO poll) and secured the second set of back-to-back shutouts in his career; he also blanked Wisconsin back-to-back on Feb. 25-26, 2022
• Brody Lamb matched his 2022-23 goal total by scoring his fourth goal of the season; it was the second time he opened the scoring in a collegiate game after he scored the first goal in the Big Ten Tournament title game against Michigan last year; it was Lamb’s first-career game-winner
• Each member of the Jimmy Snuggerud-Brody Lamb-Oliver Moore line had a goal and an assist; each player has had at least a point in all three games this season
• Jimmy Snuggerud now has his second-career three-game goal streak and led all skaters with seven shots on goal
• Jaxon Nelson led Minnesota on the faceoff dot for the third-straight game to start the year, winning 13 draws; Nelson also had a primary assist on the game-winning goal and tied Sam Rinzel with a team-best +3 rating
• Jimmy Clark won 5-of-7 faceoffs and has now won 22-of-32 draws (68.8 percent) in his young career
• Set to become the 71st Minnesota player to skate in his 150th-career game on Saturday, Bryce Brodzinski scored his first goal of the season tonight; he now leads current Gophers with three-career goals against North Dakota
• Cal Thomas led the Gophers with a career-high four blocked shots
• The only upperclassman defenseman in Minnesota’s lineup was Carl Fish; the Gophers are now 33-10-0 with Fish in the lineup, including 15-1-0 in his last 16 appearances
• Minnesota killed all four of its penalties and has killed 10-straight penalties to start the season; the Gophers had three double-digit penalty-kill streaks last season (most was 16-straight)
• The Gophers are now 151-136-16 against North Dakota and an even 13-13-1 against UND at Ralph Engelstad Arena; they are 6-6-1 against the Fighting Hawks since the teams left the WCHA
• Minnesota is off to its 35th 3-0-0 start in program history and now has back-to-back 3-0-0 starts for first time since 2013-14 and 2014-15
• The Gophers blanked UND for the 19th time ever; they have been shut out by the Fighting Hawks eight times
If he plays tonight, Carl Fish would skate in a college season opener for the first time.
The #Gophers were 6-1-0 with the St. Paul native in the lineup last season and have won 12 of their last 13 games in which he has played.
Minnesota is 30-10-0 in Fish’s 40-career games.
