Burnham now facing the same response as Theresa May in 2017 on social care.
A lot of criticism but nobody addressing the fact that the current system is bonkers
Clear message now: retract this or you’ll be suspended from UEFA competitions should nip this in the bud.
And if that has to be seen through then fine. We can all live with no Slavia Prague in the Champions League… (34/36 this year)
Czech FA is the ideal sacrificial lamb for UEFA to now make clear serious consequences will follow from breaking ranks.
Bigger than a microstate, so no claims of ‘just because it’s San Marino’.
But also nobody will care if they’re banned from UEFA competitions or next Euros
Exclusive: David Trunda, the president of the Czech Republic football association, has broken ranks with UEFA and other football governing bodies, telling me he backs FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s controversial $20bn World Cup commercial rights sale. https://t.co/IHOOFsSOCt
The difficult part is the complexity when it comes to property value. Does the taxable value fall when your neighbour’s smack head son inherits the property next door?
Should I let my house fall into disrepair because any value added will just mean a higher tax bill?
So I don’t actually hate the policy, but it should be based on the value of land.
To declare an interest - there would be many gainers in my pocket of North Yorkshire with this system. There are corresponding losers too elsewhere…
Scotland raised its top income tax rate to 48% to make the rich pay more.
New HMRC data suggests the result may have been the opposite: Scotland collected about £22m less.
We can't be sure, but Scotland may have fallen over the Laffer curve.
🧵:
Particularly pointless because the main lesson of the Manchester bombing was that every part of it was enabled by the state which:
Gave the bomber's parents refugee status despite the subsequent inquiry finding they had "held extremist views"
Had the Royal Navy bring the bomber back from Libya where he'd likely fought in the civil war
Ignored intelligence about his activities that could have prevented the attack
Paid benefits to his mother (who by that point was in Libya) which he used to buy the bomb's components
But as that's quite uncomfortable for the officials involved we get "don't look back in anger" and makework laws like this
ISA Millionaires 🇬🇧 💷
There are now several thousand people in the UK with over £1 million inside a Stocks and Shares ISA.
Every penny of that — growth,
dividends, everything — is tax-free, forever, on withdrawal.
None of them got there by picking hot stocks.
Almost all of them got there by contributing consistently, for decades, into ordinary index funds, and doing absolutely nothing exciting with it.
What do you think?🤔
I’m sorry, I know it makes everyone feel fuzzy and warm inside, but ending rough sleeping *cannot* be the priority in a country facing the issues ours does. I can’t believe just how unserious he is.
There’s a tacit conspiracy to never discuss this.
The Tories don’t want to admit they presided over redistribution from high earners to low earners.
And Labour doesn’t want to credit the Tories with it.
Right? Wrong? You decide. But it happened.

💥 Spot on.
I support the principle of shifting to Land Value taxation, but you then have to let me build a burger restaurant in my field in the middle of the National Park 🏞️
One of the chief selling points of a Land Value Tax is that it improves economic efficiency. But if people can't respond to the tax by using their land more efficiently - because of planning restrictions - or if you exempt social housing (as Dan concedes) then you don't get that.
The ‘England have had it easy’ agenda is wild.
Everyone conveniently forgetting that we had to top the group alongside another team who would have been top seeds but for the fact three nations are hosting.
Played a group winner in Round of 16; something that wouldn’t have happened with the previous format.
‘Avoided Brazil’ - well yeh, but either they were poor anyway or they’re great and we managed to beat the team who knocked them out.
