Spoilers: some words are Chinese loans & sound similar to Mandarin. Some Chinese loans use same characters but sound different bc history/geography (time/dynasty of loan), some words are Japanese (pronunciation diff but characters same). Some postwar words are straightup English
Mandarin 电话/電話 dìanhuà (lit “electric speech”) means “telephone.” Japanese 電話denwa means same and is a loan (both pronunciation & characters) from Chinese (I’m not sure which variant. Guessing Cantonese, but could be wrong)
Mandarin 棒棒糖bàngbàngtáng (stick stick candy) is just a childish/cutesy way of expressing “candy on a stick.” Japanese “rolipoppu” is obvs straight from English
Aisukuriimu is obviously a loan from English “ice cream”. Mandarin bīngqílín is more obscure but is also an English loan. 冰bīng means “ice.” 淇淋Qílín is Mandarin reading of same thing in Cantonese, since Hong Kong was introduced to 🍦1st. Canto “gilim” phonetic for “cream”
I don’t know tennis so I don’t listen hard when it’s on the news. 4+ years of listening to foreign news radio for comprehensible input— until now I vaguely thought Roland Garros was like the rising Tiger Woods of tennis, dominating all the news.
For some reason I’ve started writing a random phrase in katakana 2-3 times every 1-6 hours (when awake/home) on this chalkboard. After a few days, I switch to a new phrase.
Escuchando people 50/50 codeswitching es algo totalmente new for me. I can’t do it myself pero ahora al menos puedo understand cuando other people do it https://t.co/HHkHqa4sYX

@FitzJennings2@PorrudgePrive This is 20 yr old vague knowledge: ask somebody where all the Italian restaurants are in the North End. I don’t remember street names but there were whole rows of nothing but Italian storefronts. Stroll & pick one based on menu/aroma
