#SkiingFundamentals (outside ski pressure): One of the most misleading comments in alpine skiing is "pressure outside ski," which often leads racers to push outside ski. Demo by M. Shiffrin shows the key is to transfer pressure to outside ski, letting inside ski take the lead.
#SkiRacingTechnique: Younger racers often find it hard to get on edge when starting from a steep, icy headwall. Cyprien Sarrazin, who won the daring Kitzbuhel downhill in 2023, provided a good demo of using powerful skating and patient tuck in such a situation.
#SkiingFundamentals (tuck): There are three things that look easy, but are hard to implement: (1) athletic stance (stay low); (2) activate lower legs for powerful edging; (3) pressure transfer to the outside ski. Tuck can help them all.
Demo by Yuki Kawakami.
#SkiingFundamentals (carving): Good elements come together: athletic stance, edge first, patient release, active lower legs, retraction, etc. Result: clean arc.
Demo by Lara Colturi.
#SkiingFundamentals (short turns): Once a well-respected ski instructor said, "Short turns is like drawing a circle on the snow." Valentina Baetz nicely demonstrates it.
#SkiingFundamentals: The drill is for outside ski pressure transfer through separation. Also, note tip pressure while carving the snow.
Demo by Patrick Baetz.
Ferdinand Hirscher, Lars Kristoffersen, Eileen Shiffrin... None of these #SkiRacingParents were top-level racing coaches, yet their children rose to the top under their guidance. They knew their kids best, understood their skiing deeply, and loved them wholeheartedly.
