The mathematician Lingrui Ge recently helped find a new way to understand the solutions of almost-periodic functions, important equations that appear in quantum physics. The work has helped cement an intriguing connection between number theory and physics. https://t.co/wZ6KDc2bU5
Fractons are theoretical exotic quasiparticles that were proposed to explain certain frustrated topological phases of matter. Fractons would arise from excitations that exhibit a fractional charge of the electron. A distinct characteristic of this ghost quasiparticle is the restricted mobility, by being either immobile under local Hamiltonian dynamics or mobile in certain unknown circumstances. The study of this sub-excitations is known as Grapped Fracton Phases. These phases do not wholly fit into any of the existing physical paradigms but they can help to better resolve areas like glassy quantum dynamics, topological order, spin liquids, elasticity theory, quantum information theory, and gravity. https://t.co/kgLm0XLwEG
When a crystal is placed near a magnet, its electrons can only have certain amounts of energy. When this phenomenon is graphed, fractal patterns called Cantor sets emerge. https://t.co/eZRP500zLx
I’m honored to join the new @SimonsFdn Simons Collaboration on the Virtues of Defects, a multidisciplinary community exploring nonlocal observables in physics.

Evidence for a new particle in nuclear physics.
The junction of three flux tubes behaves as a particle-like soliton—localized, massive. In some sense it carries baryon number and it is thus absolutely stable. If baryon number really resides on the junction rather than the three valence quarks, this may be another instance of what is called “Symmetry Transmutation”.
An hour talking to the media, condensed into two sentences in the article.

When the Sun is overhead, its light passes through a relatively short layer of air. Near sunset, that same light must travel through a much longer atmospheric path. Along the way, air molecules scatter short wavelengths (blue and violet) far more efficiently than long wavelengths (red and orange) as a consequence of Rayleigh scattering, which scales roughly as 1/λ⁴.
By the time the light reaches you, much of the blue has been scattered away from the direct beam, leaving sunlight enriched in warm oranges and reds. The beautiful colors of sunset are really a visible record of light interacting with Earth's atmosphere.
