Last week, I did a quick poll (x, LinkedIn), and also asked people offline / via chat:
What common terminology to 3D tech artists use to denote parts of their daily work?
Results:👇
1) Pipeline = everything needed for a particular job.
[⚙️⚙️] ▶️ [⚙️⚙️⚙️] ▶️ [⚙️⚙️]
Example: Everything needed to create and use a 3D asset for an XR app.
2) Process = "step-by-step" to solve a specific part.
[⚙️⚙️⚙️]
Example: Modeling the asset.
3) Steps = what each process is made of.
⚙️
Example: Sculpting asset details (step 1), then re-meshing to create a low-poly version (step 2).
For the last part, "Stage" is also used sometimes, but mostly in USD workflows. However, it often denotes more of a "status" (sth. you produce) than a "step" (sth. you do).
Knowing this will help us improve language within our platform, so thanks for everyone who gave their valuable feedback✌️
