On a day like this it's important to understand the difference between ADS-B and MLAT tracking.

ADS-B is the latest generation tracking where the aircraft transponder transmit it's own position (LON/LAT) based on GPS data.

Older generation tracking is based on the ModeS transponder that is just sending out a "ping" without a position. This ping can be triangulated with multilateration (MLAT) technology from 3 or more receivers. As 3+ receivers are needed, MLAT can often only be calculated for aircraft at higher altitudes (better coverage).
