Cluster of 3 sassy stratovolcanoes in central Oregon with 3 very different personalities. Known to be heavy breathers. Part of a local gang of 450 volcanoes.
On Sunday night, I was featured in the Volcanoes episode of the new @CNN documentary "ViolentEarth". The documentary is very well-produced and focuses both on survivor stories and the science of volcanoes!
It was a great experience! 🌋🤓

Welcome back from your slumber, Mauna Loa!🌋
The last time you erupted (1984), Prince's "When Dove's Cry" had taken over the world
Last time I erupted (~1 AD) the Principate of Rome had just taken over the world. Ahhh how time flies!
Maybe I'll join in w/ an eruption!
#MaunaLoa
You can clearly see the "unzipping" of the fissure from right to left starting at 0:09 (after the fog clears). The fissure is a linear crack from which the lava flows (seen as a hot, yellow line in the thermal image)

#MaunaLoa continues to erupt! Check out this @USGS 24-hr time lapse of lava flowing down NE flank.
On Mon night lava flows crossed the Mauna Loa observatory road, cutting power to THE observatory that has taken continuous CO2 measurements since 1958, proof of rapidly rising CO2
VANCOUVER! VANCOUVER! THIS IS IT! At this moment 42 yrs ago, (May 18, 8:32 am), a M5.1 earthquake triggered the largest recorded landslide, causing eruption of @MtStHelensWA
The eruption produced a 670 mph lateral blast, pyroclastic flows, deadly lahars, & ash that circled the 🌎
#OnThisDay 42 years ago, @MtStHelensWA erupted and became the UGLIEST volcano in the Cascades! The eruption reduced her summit by 1,314 feet and left a 1 mi wide horseshoe crater scar.
That ash-hole killed 57 humans that day! Despicable!
@ere_pear13 @PetersonErikL @GianScaringi 16 papers, w/ 8 first authors, all before you are done with PhD, is INCREDIBLE! That is unheard of in my field. It really demonstrates that one should not compare one's self to others in different fields (or within your own).... Good luck! I only applied to 15 and didn't get any
Every year I rank The Great Lakes. Here is the 2022 ranking:
1. Huron
2. Superior
3. Michigan
4. Ontario
5. Erie
No movement this year. See you next year.
@DonovanWoods@LakeSuperior is OVERRATED! In fact F*** all non-volcanic lakes. "Ohh look at me, I was created when chunks of ice dug a shallow hole & got filled w/ water."
Who Cares! I'd take a lake in a crater formed by a massive eruption any day! @CraterLakeNPS@GreatLakeTaupo@TaupoCaldera
El Chichon erupted 40 yrs ago today...
Some of us are just a bit more gassy than others... its nothing to be embarrased about! Seems like the humans could use a bit of global cooling from a volcanic eruption right now.... I will see what I can do😉
The VEI-5 eruption = ~1 km3 of magma (slightly larger than Mt St Helens 2 yrs prior, but < Pinatubo in 1991).
It released much more SO2 into the atmosphere = global cooling of 0.4-0.6°C, one of the largest coolings in 3 centuries.
Also blocked sunlight & = gorgeous sunsets (3/3)
#OnThisDay 40 yrs ago, the worst volcanic disaster in Mexico's history.
After 600 yrs of dormancy, El Chichón volcano erupted explosively, producing a Plinian ash column > 27 km high. This + eruptions on April 3rd and 4th destroyed 9 villages and killed over 1,900 people (1/3)
@HungaTonga Why did you say it erupted? And also, that image that you sent is of the Azores, not the Reykjanes Peninsula. I am very confused.
Perhaps you are still recovering from that massive blast you had a few weeks ago? haha
Curious about how the scientists at @USGSVolcanoes ranked the threat levels for US volcanoes?
They used a 24-part scoring matrix based on: history of explosive eruptions, potential hazards, eruption recurrence, and nearby population.
Here's the report:

@GlacierPeak and I are the only Cascade volcanoes that erupt sticky "rhyolite" magma capable of producing huge explosive eruptions.
We're in the top 15 "Very High Threat" volcanoes list.
Yet, Glacier Peak only has ONE SEISMOMETER! Have some respect, humans! Before it's too late!
Here's a recent NEWS story. Excellent use of click-bait saying that @GlacierPeak is at a "very high threat" of erupting, although it has had that designation since 2005, and there is no new activity.....
UNLIKE ME!!!

The USGS has detected new uplift at South Sister volcano (image USGS) using satellite radar & GPS. This looks like a continuation of uplift observed between 1992-2020 & does NOT mean eruption is imminent. Uplift likely represents deep intrusion of small amounts of magma at depth.
