The problem with mourning the death of America and the world order is that it’s not done happening. You can grieve a corpse, but a comatose body is still alive, you can’t move on. The grief is perpetual, the suffering daily.
we live in age of great moral panics about things that don’t matter and zero moral outrage over some of the most egregious societal sins we’ve ever seen
@MosesSternstein@TheStalwart But does the GFC affect people in verizon coverage areas differently than other people? (That’s the core variation study is trying to exploit).
@extramsg@ryancbriggs@RemyLevin the entire sports entertainment industry is human based and massively profitable. robo sports suck, and battlebots has been around for decades. its a great analogy!
@RemyLevin@ryancbriggs Yeah even if you want to accept the poor premise many people make that school is primarily for job training, your career is entirely about youre comparative advantage. the AI could be better at everything than you, you just need to be good at what the AI is less good at
@paulnovosad@arpitrage it is pretty funny if someone in the field notorious for sticking its nose in other disciplines believes knowledge/skills are domain specific
Argh, people's thinking about this is so frustratingly bad.
When you assign a student a reading response, it's to get them to read a book/article and think about it.
You're not assigning it because they will need to write reading responses in their future career.
AI destroys our ability to assign reading responses because the cost of cheating goes to zero, and colleges (don't get me started) have chosen mostly to let students cheat if the cost is low enough.
The fact that AI destroys our ability to use this assignment provides zero information about whether doing the assignment would generate useful career knowledge for the student.
If you could lock the student in a room with just the article and a paper and pencil for an hour, this would be a good pedagogical outcome! This is why some instructors want to ban AI, because we have generations of evidence that people actually do learn stuff when they have to read and write.
Yes, it's also true that students need to be prepared for the workforce and should know how to use AI/Codex/etc. But it is obtuse to go from this to "students should use AI/Codex for every assignment and every instructor who things otherwise is out of touch."
@jodiecongirl This is the most frustrating part of the US and Canada both announcing federal laws to allegedly remove junk fees a few years ago but just like regulating one or two specific products slightly
BREAKING: More than half of the publicly identified donors to President Trump’s White House ballroom project have won new or expanded federal contracts worth more than $50 billion, per WaPo
