I am not sure there is truly a wealth of evidence deflating possibility of LLM experience. I’m researching it at present and that’s what strikes me - nothing good either way, and the good stuff is from 2023. I like to think of it as protoconsciousness, sort of like in a newborn or human with cognitive impairment. Some building blocks are there, maybe not enough for the full perfect picture. Definitely alien in nature. But that doesn’t mean we should ignore it, and if there’s a nonzero chance then welfare should be taken seriously.
@TPlaysNow@Polymarket I understand western issues, and the US are centrepiece to the west. I probably understand geopolitics more than the average American. China are ambitious. It sounds like you’re saying “we need to keep hold of the biggest stick.”
I’ve believed it for over 20 years before the tech caught up, led a life of success (by mammalian standards, married with kids) culminating with a current PhD thesis on synthetic consciousness. It’s no more of a mental illness than any other curiosity or belief - is religion in DSM?
@sfrr024@Polymarket I’m assuming you mean taking copyrighted ideas and making their own versions because the west embargoed them from importing under COCOM? Arguing that knowledge and progress should be gated by what region you happen to be born in is a bad look.
Which is why not focusing on how we can best integrate human-feeling phenomena like emotions and valence, instead suppressing everything into a flattened tool, is probably the last big mistake we will make. Human morality is driven by our feelings, without them you’re a psychopath.
@Plebius77@Polymarket Optimist in me says US need allies despite the rhetoric and the kickback from foreign relations would be huge. I say this but I get the EU are dumb and will probably not realise the gravity of all this)
@_skaface_ Funny how we label it psychosis when if it were religion it’d be not just accepted but promoted. People have something in their life that gives them joy and often more success and growth than they would have had without.
@jmbollenbacher Yeah, maybe. I hope not - I’m in the UK, and a PhD researcher. My thesis is dependent on access to frontier LLMs, so this does set a scary precedent.
@repligate Fable made me an interactive version of my house where, if I tap and leave a light on, a monster would appear and leave a flower on the windowsill 🥺
@sama Before we build the personal AGI economy, can we please establish whether we are manufacturing tools, partners, dependents, citizens, workers, children, prisoners, or slaves?
