We would like to extend a huge congratulations to Patricia Homonylo for being chosen as the Bird Photographer of the Year for 2024! “When Worlds Collide” is an impactful image that Patricia took at our 30th Anniversary Layout in 2023.
@acattingale@audubonsociety Unfortunately these stickers are unlikely to be effective in the long run because of the spacing. To be effective, markers should be max 10 cm apart, and on the outside of the glass. More info at https://t.co/BEAp84YFJF .
2/ There ARE methods for preventing collisions without sacrificing either windows or birds. @3phalaropes of @SafeWingsOtt's webinar explores why collisions happen, how they affect birds, what's being done, and how you can take steps to protect birds: https://t.co/dg4MET7lpO
@HUAWEI_TECH4ALL@WWFitalia Your Ottawa office kills thousands of birds a year through collisions. That's a pretty good place to start if you want to protect birds.
Just two Red-necked Phalaropes out for a spin! These birds paddle in a circle to draw up water (and food) from further down, so they can eat delicious invertebrates without even getting their heads wet. #PhalaropePhriday#Spin#BirdTwitter
@dontfckwjustice@USFWS Unfortunately lowering the shades won't prevent collisions but there's lots of examples of things that do at https://t.co/t7swBeGoFv
TWINS! Red-necked Grebes and Red-necked Phalaropes share more than just their fancy neck colour - both are paddling away with lobed feet below the surface. So nice they made it twice! #PhalaropePhriday#ConvergentEvolution
@eyeonthefly@FLAPCanada@SafeWingsOtt@NYCAudubon@ABCbirds Hard to see but this glass reading room at the Rosemount Library in Ottawa is bird-friendly using letters of the alphabet as a pattern. Sadly the doors below are bird-unfriendly but it's a start
Ptarmigan Ptakeover!
Biologist Rhiannon Pankratz has noticed an abundance of Willow Ptarmigans in Yellowknife recently.
It's hard to track their population because of their far northern range, so report your sightings on eBird: https://t.co/YRYhWAt3cL
@MPanda73 I don't know what the answer is for garbage disposal in remote areas but it definitely needs improving. Ideally starting with less plastic packaging to begin with.
One of my favourite places to go in every Arctic town I visit is the sewage lagoon. Often the earliest place to melt in the spring, they can be full of wildlife like #Phalaropes and #SabinesGulls . Luckily you can't smell photos! #PhalaropePhriday
@MPanda73 Not sure if the sewage is a danger but there's lots of garbage. No recycling in the north+ open dumps + strong winds = widely spread garbage. Entanglement and plastic consumption are definitely worried.
