Jeremy Clarkson made £144 farming a thousand acres in his first year.
In year six he lost five thousand.
His own words to his land agent: dispiriting enough to clear a hundred and forty-four quid at the start, and here we are six years on, down five grand. The harvest had been projected at thirty-seven thousand profit. Weather and prices took it.
Now look at what that thousand acres has behind it that yours does not.
One of the best land agents in the country. A farm manager who has worked that ground since he was a teenager. A farm shop with a queue down the lane, a pub, bestselling books, more than a quarter of a million in subsidy across three years, and a television production paying for the entire thing to be filmed.
It is the most commercially advantaged thousand acres in Britain, and the farming still loses money.
That figure should end every conversation about British agriculture, and it is the one number that never makes it onto a campaign graphic. Not the glyphosate. Not the pig housing. The margin.
Because everything people object to on a farm grows straight out of it. The field pushed to the very edge. The hedge that came out because the government paid to have it removed. The shed instead of the yard. The supermarket contract signed below cost because the alternative was no contract. Nobody intensified out of malice. They were priced into it over sixty years by a policy that decided cheap groceries mattered more than a countryside, and by a retail sector that kept the difference.
Britain now grows around sixty per cent of its own food. More than a third of British farmers are past sixty-five.
The man with the Amazon cheque cannot make a thousand acres pay.
The seventy-year-old with three hundred and no film crew is doing it anyway, and being told by people who have never sold a tonne of anything that he is the problem.
@servicerotties@lm8crmr Thanks for this info. We have a border collie rescue and we tried with a cheap basketball first. She wasn’t interested in the slightest.
Thanks for sharing this video, it’s so fun watching these working dogs play!

Freedom Convoy organizer Tamara Lich is currently in court
seeking permission to VISIT the White House as a Rebel News journalist.
Given the Emergencies Act invocation was declared ILLEGAL, this is a pivotal moment for Canada!
Following a standard workplace safety check, I have just received an email from a university administrator in which my custom of keeping books on the shelves in my office is described as "the unnecessary storing of combustible materials".

Meanwhile...
Hector lay down and slept in the open field on Wednesday, flat out on his side in the sun with his legs stretched and his eye shut, and the man who used to ride him stood at the gate and could not speak for a minute.
You have to know what a parade horse is to understand the size of this. Hector spent seventeen years as a Cavalry Black, and a horse on ceremonial duty learns that the world is bands and crowds and gunfire and flags coming at him from every side, and that his job is to carry all of it without moving a muscle he was not told to move. He learned to hold. He learned that lying down in the open, defenceless, eye shut, is the one thing a prey animal never does unless it is certain, deep in the old wiring, that nothing is coming.
For his first two years in the field he did not lie down like that. He dozed standing, the way a horse dozes when the horse is still, somewhere in its own head, on duty.
The man who groomed him and rode him through all those years still comes. Not once, as a neat ending. Regularly, whenever the leave and the long drive allow, which is more often than a busy man has any reason to manage. He brings nothing. He stands at the gate. Sometimes Hector comes over and sometimes he does not.
On Wednesday the man arrived to find his horse asleep on the ground in the sunshine, guarded by a small grey donkey who had assessed the field, found it acceptable, and taken up the watch so that the big soft veteran beside him did not have to.
The man leaned on the gate.
Nelson looked at the man.
Nelson did not raise the alarm, because there was, in Nelson's considered assessment, nothing here worth waking a tired horse for.
Also in 2022 the @bcndp promised 30k new forestry jobs. Instead we have watched the sector LOSE over 15k jobs. Hard to fix the industry when govt refuses to accept they are part of the problem. BC has been warned for years that it is the highest cost and most bureaucratic jurisdiction in North America
I watched Moonstruck last night for the first time. I've seen clips of the movie for decades, and knew what the movie was about and even knew the quotable quotes from it. I just had never seen it.
It was delightful.
An hour and a half.
Let me repeat that - it was an hour and a half! I can't remember the last time I saw a movie that wasn't clocking in at nearly three hours and I am so for bringing that back.
It was an hour and a half of pure entertainment. There was no message the producers, show runners and directors were trying to shove down my throat. There was no "difficult" history in need of rewriting to make me feel a way someone else wanted me to feel.
Just a silly story about a silly family doing the messy things families do.
And people looked normal!! Not only normal, they looked different. I didn't confuse all the characters with one another because they all looked uniquely human with bad teeth, grey hair, too thin, too fat, too old.
Let's make more of these wonderfully delightful and reasonable length movies once again, please.
Why is it that ‘saving the planet’ often requires cutting down a whole bunch of trees?
This is in the west end of Vancouver. Some 80+ old trees are going to be chopped to make way for… a TEMPORARY bike lane 🤦🏻♂️
Not just any trees - 100 YEAR OLD trees 😡

Panicking David Eby is lashing out with frantic distractions so you won’t see his abysmal record. Under his watch, B.C. has endured five consecutive quarters of net business exits. Businesses are abandoning a government that has killed opportunity in this province.

A stark reminder from 2022:
'In Case You Missed It'
"• 400-member Band is given agricultural land by B.C. government
• turns land into billion-dollar mall
• sells mall to Chinese
• leases remaining agricultural land to tech giants like Amazon
• gets fabulously wealthy
"Moral of the story is they don’t want their old culture back."

- CBSA officers seized 121 bricks of cocaine from his truck
- The justice found “officers did not have reasonable grounds to perform that strip search”
Question: How much blow do they need to find to make it reasonable?

This man brutally and repeatedly smashed a Seagull against the wall of the Harbour View Cafe in Truro because it tried to steal some food. He then stuffed the Seagull through the fence onto the road where if floundered with two broken wings.
This was in front of numerous people and children who were hugely upset.
Visiting New Brunswick museums reminded me of how much the Wokesters have robbed from our cultural institutions. They're still in the phase of "hey! We have black people and we're all very proud of them!" Rather than "our black people have never known success or joy or purpose due to omnipotent, invisible white supremacy."
